Dear Patrick,

PHPSlash uses the old-style PHPLIB framework for session management (which
is a wrapper around PHP4 new-style sessions).  Session variables are in the
global namespace.

However, PHPSlash has only one session variable, and that's $auth.  It's an
object of a class extending PHPLIB's auth class.  If you want the username,
look in the array $auth->auth.

Other information about the user can be found in the database.  What else
are you looking for?

[phpslash-users] Newbie session problem

Hi, I'm a bit new to PHP and sessions, and I can't figure out how to access the session variables (like username) in PHPSlash.  I can get the session id and I've looked through the session file in /tmp , so I know that a session exists, but I just can't access the variables. [phpslash-users] config weirdness - bug ?

Ok, boys and girls...I've been playing around with the config files for 
both .71 and .72 and there seems to be some weirdness here. I have tested 
my site on 5 different computers. All in Norway, all running Windows, all 
in GMT+1. The only difference is the browsers and the language of the OS 
(the language of the browser etc doesn't seem to matter).

Now, for www.pda-nytt.no , all the computers with English windows - 
regardless of browser type or version (IE, Opera and FireFox) - get a time 
which is exactly 11 hours earlier than the computers running Norwegian 
versions. So...the English OSs reports a time 5 hours before the actual 
time of submission (the server is in GMT-5, so it should be 6 hours 
earlier) while the Norwegian OSs reports a time 6 hours after the actual 
submission time.

Also, these times are the same for both the testbed and the production site 
(running off the same db) - but both versions have different configs.

Is this a known issue ?

Hello Panji and translators in general,

Attached is a 5kb gzip'ed version of the en.php file that needs to be 
translated to other languages. Please note that you can access these files 
directly from the CVS repository at the following address:

Before you decide to start translating this file, please make sure that you 
use the previous translations located at the above URL. In your case Panji, 
you can start from scratch and when you finish send the resulting file in a 
compress format to the phpslash-devel list (or Joe and Luis (me)).

I'm not sure what type of characters the Bahasa language has, however, 
please make sure that they are encoded properly in the plain text file. 
UTF-8 should be the right encoding format nowadays, however, the site still 
uses ISO encoding. I guess people using Bahasa would create their own 
slashHead templates with the proper encoding string in the HTML head tag.

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate in writing to the list.

P.S. I use the phpslash-dev module from CVS because we are moving forward to 
release phpslash 0.8 soon.

I tried doing this but get the error "ERROR: psl_getLocalinfo: file either 
nonexistent or not readable: 
/home/pda-nytt/class72/locale/en_US.LC_TIME.php". Since I cannot create 
symlinks myself, should I just substitue this with the Norwegian version ?

Yes indeed, remove all files from the "locale" directory (inside "class" or 
"include" depending on what version of phpslash you are talking about), 
leaving only the locale that you care (your language). Do the same for every 
directory inside templates making sure that you have a language directory 
that matches the one that you want to use, say "templates/fr" and have 
symlinks for "en" just in case "cd templates && ln -s fr en". That will take 
care of all translation issues and it will force all browsers to have 
whatever language you want your page to be.

Ok, I've been playing around with the setup and I think I've found some issues.

1. It's not possible to control the language from the config file. It's 
read from the browser (shouldn't this be optional ? Some people don't want 
mixed languages on their pages)

2. [Home page options] seems to be controlled by the browser's environment 
rather than the config.

Is it possible to change these things ?

Well - that's the problem. It's all in English even though the config 
specifies "no" (which works for my .71)

I don't have access to the error log, but you can check http://www.pda-
nytt.no/psl72/ (index.php) and http://www.pda-
nytt.no/psl72/profile.php. The first works, the second comes up with 
not being available. The permissions are the same...

Nope. It's section_id 3, and it works with the old config (it's the 
same db and same variables).

"won't load" - what does this mean?  Do you see anything? errors? error 
log?

Most debug statements are commented out, so just turning debug on 
usually won't get you much except some html weirdness or strikethroughs 
for untranslated text..

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work either. I kind if figured it 
wouldn't since it's never really been wrong (same as the old the whole 
time, and as far as I know the .71 and .72 configs are identical but one 
variable).

I tried removing a " from the config to see if it would throw an error or 
die, but it didn't die or throw an error (who wrote the parser ??? ;) so 
it's kind of hard to tell if that might be the problem. I'll look again 
tonight...I also tried moving one of the config blocks higher up in the 
config to see if it was then read, but nothing happened.

One change I did manage to get through was in the RSS part 
(http://www.pda-nytt.no/psl72/backend.php?view=rss) where I changed some of 
the values to include a number. This, at least, shows that the config is 
being read and that it's not reading the config from the production site.

Any takers ? I'm seriously thinking about just waiting for .8...

Do you have caching off?  Try setting $JP_CACHE_ON = 0 in config.php.
Sometimes an error you made initially isn't covered up until you clear the
cache.

Other than that it's a mystery to me.

I've been trying to upgrade my site to .72 as I need it to experiment a 
little. As far as I can see there are only marginal changes, which normally 
would mean there's nothing much involved in the upgrade.

However - using the same parameters I used with my .71 config I run into a 
few problems. While the site is working fine off the old db (thank 
goodness) with both .71 and .72 the configs seems to be read differently...

Here are my problems (the ones I'm aware of):
* Ignoring language settings: even though my old site ran fine with 
Norwegian language, .72 doesn't for some reason.
* Some php files won't load even though they're in the right place. I've 
checked their access rights. For instance, profile.php won't load while 
about.php and backend.php loads just fine.
* The front page section doesn't change (from Home to Forsiden)

I initially thought this could be a problem with locating the class 
directory, but I cannot find a problem here since some classes are 
obviously loaded just fine (or the main page wouldn't come up right...). 
All the files, as well as the class dir itself, has the same access rights 
set as the old one (which works)

I have also set debug to on, but it doesn't print any errors for me.

Anyone got any good ideas ?

Nice, especially if these are the same skins without any additional HTML 
added, just translated. Pack that in a .tar.gz and send them to me.

on the right-hand-side you can add blocks from the admin interface. blocks 
can have RSS, Cal, HTML, or customize types. Making new blocks is very 
simple, but, you might not have to since you can easily cook a .tpl file and 
pass that as an argument for a given block. I believe you can see the 
documentation for phpslash online at http://phpslash.sf.net but, you can get 
most good examples out of looking at the source itself. The only files that 
you are concern with are inside the "class" directory. Check the 
Block_render_*.class files.

Check that your slashHead.tpl file has the right encoding set. Though, it 
could be the case that the string & got escaped when put in the database and 
un-escaped when displayed back... My best suggestion would be to edit the 
es.php locale file and make sure that you use propper accented vowels 
instead of HTML equivalents like &aacute or the like. é.
Now, in my case (latinomixed.com) i have functions that parse the á 
stuff for the propper á when i'm sending plain text emails to subscribed 
users. I believe these functions got commited to the phpslash-dev repository 
(CVS), which is the one we used the most nowadays.

The functions should be in functions.inc or somewhere in the class directory 
(it skips my mind at this time). However, the easiest is to just make sure 
that the es.php file is encoded in the same format as the site uses for 
charset (iso whatever or UTF-8). Lately I use all my clients and text 
editors in UTF-8 and I believe the charset for the HTML files should also be 
in that charset, so, something to look at for the future...

That's weird, however, the string used for making up that date is in the 
"class" directory. Maybe the functions.inc file... or one of those tz_* 
files. I have no idea. However, make sure that you have the propper things 
setup in your config.ini.php file:

I started on an embedded phpBB in phpslash, I had it cross-authenticate but
didnt get as far as accounts being set up correctly (you had to set up
account twice).  I think it's a little broken at the moment but you can look

I'd  like to finish the thing using phpslash 0.8 and make it a proper module
(though it pretty much is set up that way already), if I only had the
time...

You have done well, there are other strings that don't get translated from 
the locale es.php files ( class/locale/es.php ). That means that even if you 
changed the default language in the config.ini.php file, you still might 
need to "fork" the themes located inside "public_html/templates".
Inside that directory you will see a "en" directory that holds all 
templates. Essentially, you will need to create a "es" directory and inside 
this directory, create a directory for whichever theme (skin) you will be 
using, let's say "basiccurves" or whatever skin you choose. Now, you will 
need to copy from "en/basiccurves" the files to "es/basiccurves" and 
translate the non-html strings. Lastly, inside "es/basiccurves" you should 
have a file named "skin.ini" that contains a line like the following:

skin.parent = "../en/basic"

This tells phpslash to use files from the previous directory, english 
language, basic skin, whenever it needs a file that is not part of the 
spanish (es) basiccurves directory that you created.

I hope this helps. In general, it would be good if you subscribe to the 
phpslash-users list and ask questions there. However, it is fine if you send 
me your questions directly.

(j/k, just to create some flamewars for those zealous Linux users who read 
the phpslash-users list).

As a general rule, we are not aware of any problem specific to Windows. 
phpslash seems to run just as good on all platforms.

Last thing, we are in the process of releasing phpslash-0.8 which is also 
very stable, but, still going through some testing. We would appreciate the 
feedback.
Also, 0.8 will have better support for translations.

[phpslash-users] Receiving: 500 Internal Server Error

Hello, I am new to the phpsash mailing lists and I don't know on which list 
to post this particular problem, so I am posting it on two list. Sorry if 
you are getting this twice.

I just installed phpslash Version: 0.7.2 everything seems to be working 
fine. However, about every 10 page requests, I get a "500 Internal Server 
Error". This seems to be happening at random. If I reload the page that gave 
me the error, it then loads the page properly.

Is there some kind of a known bug that causes this problem?

Here are some of the specs:
Hosting provider: 1and1
PHPSlash Version: 0.7.2
PHP Version: 4.2.3
PHP Major Version: 4
PHP Minor Version: 3


Also, is jpcache installed and running with the default setup or do I have 
do manually install it?

Yeah, I agree.  But is "event" an extension of the story class or are 
they both extensions of another class?  I keep threatening to add my 
file-publishing module for binary downloads, and I got to thinking 
about the same thing.  Articles, events, files, these are all 
subclasses of a "resource" --something that can be accessed by URL.

Maybe in DB terms there isn't much of a difference in perspective.  But 
we might save some code by abstracting story_base and extending for 
other resources.

If you just need a few more fields for all stories, you can use the
story_default_options mechanism.

I like the way phpslash works and I'm comfortable with the more or less 
default install (http://plantbreeding.org) but I'd like to be able to post 
stories into different sections and give them a different look.  For 
example, I want to make an event calendar section.  The "story" would need 
a start date and end date.  In the calendar view, one would see all the 
events sorted by start date.  The story box would only include dates, Title 
(linked to a conference website or whatever), and location.  Just a simple 
list with the list of events.

To do this, my thoughts are as follows:

simply add the additional fields to the story table and modify the "submit 
story" and "edit_story" accordingly. (perhaps best would be a edit calender 
link and not mess with the functioning story forms).

create a very simple "fancybox.tpl" how I like it

How do I have the calendar section use simplebox.tpl while the home section 
uses fancybox.tpl?

Any better ways to do it?
