My conception of medium might be a little on the low side though. It also depends on your system configuration, redhat-7.0 adds a lot of extra DSO's to apache which you may not need, poke in there to see. Run "ab" on your phpslash site with various parameters to see how well your setup will perform under various amounts of load (read the --help for ab to see it's options.. ab -n100 -c10 is a good place to start) I'd say if you were having performance issues, start trimming fat from your system, run as few daemons as possible, make sure your default runlevel is 3, not 5 :) Start turning off Apache module that you don't need / use, make sure that .php3 comes early in the DirectoryIndex Directive (The more crap you have the longer it takes to get the front page cause apache has to issue a stat() call for each entry in that list till it finds something that matches) Try to put your php configuration into your httpd.conf file or the master php.ini and not in an .htaccess file 'cause .htaccess files use lots of diskI/O and cost load time.. For reference: - My production machine is a pII/200 with 64Mb's RAM and IDE33 drives running redhat-7.0 with all the apache goodies (and MySQL) and phpslash runs ok but I run a lot of extra crap on that machine. - Previous production machine was a dual ppro/200 with 128Mb's ram and FastSCSI drives and it ran swimmingly till it got frozen over christmas and dies (damn Western Digital drives.. They're all crap). - My Current devel box (all of one user) is a pIII/733 with 512Mb's of ram and a SCSI-160 drive (redhat-7 as well) and it's quite powerful :) - My previous devel box, was a k6-2/350 with 64MB's of ram and IDE-33 drives and things were zippy there too (redhat-6.2) Even under a heavy ab run - Another production machine is a Apple9600/MP (dual PPC 604e's) with SCSI-2 and 128Mb's of ram and things work quite well there. - My laptop is a Powerbook Pismo (g3/500Mhz IDE-33, 128Mb's RAM YDL/CS-1.2.1) and things are ok under one user I have never stress tested this machine.. It moves around too much for me to care) - I tried phpslash on a g4/400Mhz with 128Mb's of ram and OSX-Public Beta, and phpslash seemed to work well, stress testing showed it to be a little weak though.. I presume that was because Public Beta has a few performance issues that needed sorting out. At some point I'm gonna put linux on the extra SGI Indy-R5k I have and see how that is, but I don't expect it to be too powerful.. poor Indy got smoked by a fast 486 :) -n -- ...... nathan hruby - nh...@ar... computer support specialist department of drama and theatre http://www.drama.uga.edu/ ...... |
