I'm a highschool student (a senior) and, as resident perl freak, do freelance perl development. Not much, mind you, but a bit. It's a great job because I basically get to decide what I want to do and when (except laziness does cause a problem sometimes). > > > So, as a freelancer, one thing I know I could do would be install / > > > hack phpSlash for folks. Yes! There are tons of people who need these services. Or, if you want, you can work for a devopment house that bids on large projects and then divides the work among a bunch of at-home developers. For freelancing, a great way to get your name out is to create a free script or two and list it on some of the listing sites like http://php.resourceindex.com. Or if you want paying jobs right away, put in bids at http://www.elance.com. Or, create a website describing your services and put an ad in a webmaster type ezine. That's how I get most of my jobs. > If I'm really gonna go out on my own, I'd prefer to (and yes, I realize > this is utopian of me) to have all the code I produce be Free, unless it > was sesitive to a company's survival (ie: build in a module that > interfaces some non-free code that I can't release by the non-free code's > license, or deal with sesitive data, etc.. I haven't though this out too > much) The way that I normally work things is that I hold copyright to whatever I create and give the person who hired me an exclusive license for the whole of the project. That way, I can reuse parts in other projects, but the person who hired me is happy because I won't go and sell or give away the same code to someone else. Of course, I could put all of my parts together to create a GPL'd product, but usually customers don't want their code GPL'd. -Dale |
