Hi, I was able to install the PHP Java Bridge (version 3.2.1) a couple of years ago in a Linux environment successfully. Now, I must repeat the experience but on a Windows machine running IIS 6 (I have no choice). The PHP Bridge seems to have change a lot since version 3.2.1 and now I'm unable to make it work anymore. Is it because the PHP Java Bridge does not work on that platform? I was unable to make it work following tutorial : http://www.dsl.uow.edu.au/~sk33/pjb_iis5.htm . The files in the current version of the bridge does not match the files described in the tutorial. All I'll need to accomplish is to call a java function located in a jar file. That's it. In order to perform that, do I need to install a Java App Server (Tomcat or other)? Both INSTALL.J2SE and INSTALL.J2EE seems to required a Java App Server to work. Is there somewhere a tutorial that explain how to do this for IIS 6? Best regards, --Sebastien Roy |

Responsible VM: > 1.5.0_10@http://java.sun.com/ at the error message above means that there's an open reference from Digester. Which means that you have compiled against a different library version than the one you've deployed (or the external library is simply missing). Please use a standard J2EE server and the standard J2EE deployment tools and please re-read the README section Java platform issues for details. there are three separate downloads, one is a pure Java implementation, the other ones are for RedHat/Fedora and Debian/Ubuntu.
Please see the package description for details.

Hi,
as long as you keep your libraries within the J2EE .war archive, the J2EE server automatically reloads them when you deploy a new version of your software.
Unfortunately this is not possible for all libraries. log4j.jar for example shouldn't be deployed this way, see the section "Web application reloading and static fields in shared libraries" from the tomcat release notes.

Hi Jost
Thanks for getting back to me.
After a lot of looking into the problem I found that the jvm must have
been caching the old class. I found this by shutting my server down and
then restarting it which didnt fix the problem so I then deleted my
classes and called the php script again. This still didnt fix the
problem so I restarted the server again and found that the class no
longer exsisted so I then proceeded to recompile my classes and then ran
the script again and everything worked fine.
Now I just need to find a way to stop the caching from happening. :)
Thanks
Barry

Hi,

what does
echo java_inspect (java("PDFGenerator"));
display?
It it shows only one zero-arg constructor, then you're probably using an old version of your class.

Hi I wondered if somebody could help me out here. I have a java class that has a constructor that takes 2 strings as arguments when I use the class I get the below exception from within my php page. Fatal error: Uncaught [[o:Exception]:"java.lang.Exception: CreateInstance failed: new PDFGenerator([o:PhpParserString], [o:PhpParserString]). Thanks for any help. Barry |

Hi,
I don't think it is possible to compile the Unix/Linux sources on the macintosh. Please use the pure Java download instead.

hello to all, guys! :) im new to php-java bridge...it really seems it could solve me TONS of problem at university, where i have lot of java chicks to run and a big hateness for jsp interfaces :) but before i have to compile and install it on OSX. i tried following the flow in the INSTALL file. all reqs are ok, but i got this fatal during make process: ./libtool: line 454: CDPATH: command not found ./libtool: line 1132: func_opt_split: command not found libtool: Version mismatch error. This is libtool 2.2.4, but the libtool: definition of this LT_INIT comes from an older release. libtool: You should recreate aclocal.m4 with macros from libtool 2.2.4 libtool: and run autoconf again. i have no idea on what i have to do....got some clues? :) tnx in advanced and have a nice week! gabriele |

Hi,
we keep the C wrapper because some distributions use it. If you have questions regarding the distribution packages, please contact the distributor.

It's for backward compatibility.

Ah, I see. The latest INSTALL.LINUX file is in the binary download. I will check it in, if I have some time.

If it was needed only back then, why is it still part of 'make install', 'install.sh'? I assume the only purpose of 'java.so' now is to enable the httpd(apache) to start a JVM as child, which could serve as a backend for the php-java-bridge? >> So all (current) articles that describe the use of the extension >> are just crap? > > I don't think so. -- If you find a bug in our documentation, please > file a bug report. 'INSTALL.LINUX' from CVS says: <quote>The "java.so" file contained in the Linux binary packages is the PHP "Java.inc" compiled to native code</quote> So,that's not true anymore, is it? Hi,
probably your Java object does not save or restore all of its state when the tomcat back end is restarted.
Either remove the distributable flag from the configuration or make your Java object(s) persistent.

Hi,
I'm confused with a java session variable behaviour. It is an instance of java class created on the following manner:
$session=java_session();
$rep=new Java("depths.moodle.RepositoryFactory");
$session->put("rep",$rep);
When I restart Tomcat and try to identify if this variable exists:
$rep=$session->get("rep");
if (is_null(java_values($rep))){
if condition is not true, that is, rep variable is not null. However, this value is not an java object that is created before, so I can't use it. In my application, I want to use this variable if it exists or to create a new instance if it does not exists, but I can't check it in this way.
Can you explain me what is the problem with this approach, please?
Zoran

The JIT compiler from the OpenJDK generates code which executes up to 5 times faster than the code generated from GCJ. i've installed IBM's jdk se 6 locally, which java /home/sc/jdk16-ibm/bin/java java -version java version "1.6.0" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build pxa6460sr1-20080416_01(SR1)) IBM J9 VM (build 2.4, J2RE 1.6.0 IBM J9 2.4 Linux amd64-64 jvmxa6460-20080415_18762 (JIT enabled, AOT enabled) J9VM - 20080415_018762_LHdSMr JIT - r9_20080415_1520 GC - 20080415_AA) JCL - 20080412_01 and the php-java-bridge builds "--with-java=$HOME/jdk16-ibm", installs without error. i'm on a shared Apache host, and note that on nav to my site, "top" shows, 1463 sc 15 0 81800 38m 25m S 0 0.2 0:00.12 gij-4.1 which is the gcc JIT, of course. as the host/server ENV is independent of _my_ ENV, i'm guessing that to get the server to invoke the IBM JIT for "my" php-java-bridge/jjava.so extension, i need to specify some AddHandler directive in my .htaccess ? if so, are there any docs/examples on this ? (haven't found any yet ...) or, different method? thanks! |

Hi,
probably
> gcj (GCC) 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-20)
supports only 32 Bit code generation.
Please use a real Java implementation instead. -- GCJ compilation is a waste of time, anyway. The JIT compiler from the OpenJDK generates code which executes up to 5 times faster than the code generated from GCJ.

hi, i'm doing a 1st install of php-java-bridge_5.2.2. reading @: http://php-java-bridge.sourceforge.net/doc/faq.php i note: #Can I use Java libraries without installing java? Yes. On a GNU operating system (e.g.: GNU/Linux, GNU/windows (aka "cygwin"), ...) you can use the GCC compiler to compile Java classes to native code. Simply compile the C based extension and omit the --with-java= configure option. The bridge will use the libgcj library, which is part of the GNU gcc compiler. This library also uses much less system resources (memory, files) than a "real" Java VM. on my box, uname -o GNU/Linux -> Debian gcj --version gcj (GCC) 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-20) autoconf --version autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.62 libtool --version ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 2.2.4 automake --version automake (GNU automake) 1.10.1 which java /home/sc/jdk/bin/java java -version java version "1.6.0_06" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode) but @, cd php-java-bridge-5.2.2 phpize ./configure the process dies at, ... FATAL: Native compilation not supported on this system. Install a java SDK and run: ./configure --with-java=<JAVA_HOME> Back-end configuration failed. Please install the recommended autoconf, libtool and automake versions or disable back-end configuration and use the pre-compiled J2EE back-end: ./configure --disable-backend --with-java=<JAVA_HOME> configure: error: ./configure.gnu failed for server i thought i had the prereqs taken care of for a java-less install. what am i missing? thanks! |

Hello Jost, thank you very much for your very helpful answer. I am really happy about the fact that i understood the way the bridge is working. in fact it is not hard to understand but the lots of wrong articles made it hard to me ;-) > If you find a bug in our documentation, please file a bug report. no, i did not want to say that your doc is buggy. I meant the other articles, e.g. from phpmagazin and other sources. But i looked again on your page and found nowhere the hint that the extension is not needed anymore. So it is confusing. thank you again for your great endurance and your great work .... best regards, felix |

Hi Felix,
[java.so for backward compatibility]
> Well, this sounds for me like a bad april fool.
Bear in mind that I have written the PHP/Java Bridge in 2003. PHP 4 didn't have the functionality required to access Java, so a piece of glue code called "java.so" was necessary.

I don't think so. -- If you find a bug in our documentation, please file a bug report.

Yes. You copy the JavaBridge.war to the J2EE server or Tomcat, wait one second until the JavaBridge directory appears, and then copy the JavaBridge directory over to the HTTP server document root.
You don't need to use our Java class implementation, if you don't want to. Please see our FAQ to see another Java class definition which fits into one (long) line.

Well, this sounds for me like a bad april fool. So all (current) articles that describe the use of the extension are just crap? well, good to know. so i have to rewrite a part of my chapter (diploma thesis) about the bridge :( Ok, so all that is needed, is the java/Java.inc stuff an VM and the JavaBridge.jar ... or if i use the j2ee-version i need the java/Java.inc stuff and the war-file. Is that right? The implementation of the Java class just communicates with the javabridge-servlet by using the bridge protocol and that's all the magic? sounds easy but you and i know...it's great work. Please tell me if my understanding of the way the bridge works is wrong. At the moment i am pretty confused by all the wrong information. Thank you for your help, have a nice day, Felix |

Hi Felix,
sorry for being overly terse. But the PHP/Java Bridge is complete as it is. Instead of adding more features I'd like to remove features which are confusing or not commonly used.
> But what is the difference by using the extension?
It's a dummy, used for backward compatibility only. People expect a PHP java extension, so we provide one which doesn't do anything useful.
> I am sorry for my maybe dumb questions but i read over 5

Yes. Most of the information you find on the internet are outdated, simply false or at least misleading.

Ow my goodness! Never thought that the answer to my question can be found in the FAQ. Thank you so much! But now I am even more confused. I read that i can use the php/Java bridge without using the php-extension. The text said that i only have to include java/Java.inc and it works without extension (so it does!). But what is the difference by using the extension? Does this included code automatically detect the installed extension and use ist? I am sorry for my maybe dumb questions but i read over 5 different articles about the bridge and every article provides totally different information. felix > __________________________________________________________ > Gesendet von Yahoo!
