Sorry I am not more knowledgable about the Java-Bridge. I installed on a
Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon LAMP web server a few months ago. I remember at the
time that I went with the older version of Ubuntu because I found
instructions for that version. I has been working fine since then.
Recently I have been getting intermittent crashes and the error message
appeared to be referring to the Java code, so I suspected that it had
something to do with the Java-Bridge. I contacted this list hoping
someone had seen a similar problem in the past and could shed some light.
As to your question. What is the matter with the PHP/Java Bridge on your operating system? Well I don't know. That is sort of what I was asking.
Anyway, it appears to be working for now. And I have to get back to my
normal duties which is developing apps. Sorry if this was an
inappropriate question.

Hi,
sorry, but I don't understand this question at all. What is the matter
with the PHP/Java Bridge on your operating system?
I do understand that you have problems installing a standard web archive
file into a debian-patched tomcat. But why do you need to destroy objects
manually and which error message do you get when you deploy the
JavaBridge.war file into debian's tomcat?

Hi Micah, yes, we might update the debian binary in the future. In the meantime please install Java >= 1.4 and use the pure Java implementation of the PHP/Java Bridge instead: => http://downloads.sourceforge.net/php-java-bridge/php-java-bridge_5.2.2_j2ee.zip?modtime=1206907745&big_mirror=0 Regards, Jost Boekemeier __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? FYI. I tried something that has helped. I was looking over the PHP code
and noticed that I never destroyed the Java object, so I set it to null
after getting the result string back. I'm not sure if that's the proper
way to destroy an object in Java or not. Then to be safe I rebooted the
web server. It threw the error the first time I ran the code, but has run
several times since then no problem. I'm not warm and fuzzy, but I have
been able to complete my objective for this afternoon.
I appreciate any input and am going to continue working on this. We are
starting to move things to web interfaces and this is the only approach on
Linux that allows PHP access to Unidata. At least that I have been able
to find.
I appreciate any ideas and will continue monitoring the list.
Thank you very much.,

Hi Benjamin, > I do not understand very well what you mean by > "PHP's reference counter > can't reclaim cycles". => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_counting > Anyway, the bridge is > started at the beginnig of > the application as a subprocess You've got it backwards. Please see the JSR 223 API spec and the Swing example. You can start Java with: jrunscript -p php-interactive and invoke php/gtk from Java. > In my opinion, php is a powerfull language Sorry, but this is nonsense. PHP is a language suited for the web. A PHP script cannot run for more than 30 seconds. If it does, one may receive out of memory problems because some objects cannot be reclaimed. Furthermore the PHP/Java Bridge protocol assumes that a PHP script does not allocate more than 2^32 handles. Even the fastest computer cannot exceed this limit within 30 seconds. Bear in mind that the HTTP server and the web browser have similar limits. > didn't know that python and scheme have their own GUI They use Java's Swing or other toolkits. Hello, I do not understand very well what you mean by "PHP's reference counter can't reclaim cycles". Anyway, the bridge is started at the beginnig of the application as a subprocess and should be stopped at the end. In my opinion, php is a powerfull language especially to manipulate string. It uses simple methods. Php syntax is very simple too. For the GUI under Win32, java API isn't as easy to use as Gtk, and I didn't know that python and scheme have their own GUI (without using GTK libraries). Thanks for your help... Benjamin. php...@li... a écrit : > Hi, > > you can terminate any Java process with System.exit(code). > > >> I use php-gtk with javabridge under Win32... All my code is >> This works fine... PHP is not a gerneral purpose programming language, you can't start a GUI loop from it. If you do, you'll quickly run out of memory because PHP's reference counter can't reclaim cycles. Second, the PHP/Java Bridge shouldn't be started/terminated for each request. And third, GTK isn't quite stable on Windows, anyway. > > Why don't you use a proper programming language such as Java, Scheme or Python to write your GUI? > > > Regards, > Jost Boekemeier > > > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Sie sind Spam leid? PHP is not a gerneral purpose programming language, you can't start a GUI loop from it. If you do, you'll quickly run out of memory because PHP's reference counter can't reclaim cycles. Second, the PHP/Java Bridge shouldn't be started/terminated for each request. And third, GTK isn't quite stable on Windows, anyway. Why don't you use a proper programming language such as Java, Scheme or Python to write your GUI? Regards, Jost Boekemeier __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I use php-gtk with javabridge under Win32... All my code is a standalone
php script. To start JavaBridge, i use this command :
<?
// Starting JavaBridge
$port = 8080;
system("start JavaBridge\JavaBridge.jar SERVLET_LOCAL:$port");
$java_inc_filename = "http://127.0.0.1:$port/JavaBridge/java/Java.inc";
require_once($java_inc_filename);
?>
This works fine... At the end of my php script I would like to terminate
the 'javaw' process (win32). I use the following piece of code :
<?
java("java.lang.System")->exit(0);
?>
This terminate the bridge but with a little delay and cause an error. Is
there a better way to do that ?
Thanks in advance,
Benjamin.

Thank you Jost. Just as a follow up then, both statements below are
correct?
1. If a PHP script wants to access a remote java service, the PHP
script need only include Java.inc.
2. There is no binary version of Java.inc.

Subject: Re: [Php-java-bridge-users] Bridge from PHP
Hi,
I think this is a misunderstanding. A php_java.dll or a java.so are
used to start Java as a sub-process of the HTTP server.
However, this doesn't improve the performance in any way; if you want a
faster communication, eliminate the number of round-trips (see
java_begin_document()/java_end_document()).
Implementing the communication in C or assembler is a waste of time. It
may even be slower than the current PHP/Java implementation, because you
can't easily cache context ID's in these languages.

Hello, I am confused as to whether or not there is a .so (or .dll for windows) that does the same thing as the pure PHP Java.inc? Basically, I want my LAMP (or WAMP) server with no java installed to connect to a remote Java object server. I was able to do this fine with the pure PHP Java.inc. The pure PHP Java.inc does what I want it to do, but would not a .so (or .dll for windows) be a little faster? I am confused as to whether or not the functional equivalent of the pure PHP Java.inc can be built from the source into an .so (without Java on the compile machine). I guess another way to put it is I want to eliminate the include() call. I know the FAQ says that this is not a performance issue....I suppose this is true if the server cache's the Java.inc opcode...but would not a .so still be faster? So I guess my specific questions are: 1. Is there a way to build an .so that does what Java.inc does in terms of enabling connections to remote Java services w/o Java on the local machine? 2. Has anybody turned Java.inc into a .so, or is the consensus that caching the opcode is fast "enough"? Thanks! |

Hi,
you should be able to back-port the PHP 5 example to PHP 4.
Just remove all try/catch statements and replace the java_x_y_z::type() with java("x.y.z") and new java_x_y_z() with new java(...) calls.
Type casts etc. aren't available in PHP 4 either, so you'll need to use java_values($javaObject) to convert a Java object into a PHP value.

Hi,
CrystalReports X and above have a Java API, and you should be able to invoke reports through that API.
However, the PHP/Java Bridge has been developed 5 years ago for a pure Java reporting engine; search for "i-net CrystalClear" on the internet.

Dear Jost and all, thanks for your quick reply. I already downloaded and compiled php-java-bridge-4.3.2 from its tar ball under FC5 linux. I'm using libgjc library, not Sun JVM. > If you still use PHP 4 please use PHP/Java Bridge version 4.x or 3.x instead. So in principle I should be able to run itext4php via php-java-bridge-4.3.2, shouldn't I? If so, does anybody know a sample code for PHP4 which makes use of itext4php? I installed itext4php version 1.2.0-1 (from rpm). Thanks a lot in advance, ****************************************************** Octavi Fors Universitat de Barcelona. Àrea de Tecnologies. Hi,
the PHP/Java Bridge library 5.x is for PHP 5 and above.
If you still use PHP 4 please use PHP/Java Bridge version 4.x or 3.x instead.
However, since PHP/Java Bridge version 4.x is not available for download anymore, you must check out the appropriate branch from the CVS.

Jost Boekemeier

Hi, I need to check (with php-4.4.4 and apache2) if a given PDF file is digitally signed. These PDF files are stored in the server filesystem. I've told that iText Java library can perform such checking. I installed php-java-bridge-4.3.2 and itext4php-1.2.0-1 and tried to run the example script "itext_pdf.php" which comes with that package. That didn't work: I guess because it is intended for PHP5 only. Is there any example script that makes use of itext4php-1.2.0-1 but for php-4.4.4 or below? No, there apparently are other ways. I cannot help you with them for I know only what I've worked with. I'm sure someone else (Jost for sure) would know. However, the Tomcat setup was the easiest way I came across. Tomcat is pretty simple to install. --Nathan Shaskin Web Programmer Compliance Publishing --- On Tue, 7/22/08, php...@li... <php...@li...> wrote: > From: php...@li... <php...@li...> > Subject: Re: [Php-java-bridge-users] Installation of the PHP Bridge on IIS 6 > To: php...@li... > Date: Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 3:18 PM > Hi, > > Thanks for the quick answer. So this mean that I must absolutely have a Tomcat running in order to use the PHP Java Bridge, they is no way for me to perform a call to a method inside a jar file without an App server?
