    Hi,
Have installed the unified binary version of Postgresql 8.1 from sforge.

    1. After installation ran "Create User" and accepted default field values BUT entered a password (not my existing admin pword, a new pword).
      The following message resulted:

    Database Connection Failed:
could not connect to server: Connection refused
Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting
    TCP/IP connections on port 5432?

    1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing/Firewall I created a new firewall "postgresql" with port 5432 which I enabled.

    2. Ran "Create User", result as 1. above.

    3. Please note my computer is set, somewhere as PowerBook.local
Should this be the value in the "Server" field?
I did try 'Server: PowerBook.local' but result was as 1. above.

    4. Consol Log:

    2006-04-14 17:07:16.279 Create User[494] Options:
    2006-04-14 17:07:16.280 Create User[494] Connection to database 'template1' failed.
2006-04-14 17:07:16.281 Create User[494] could not connect to server: Connection refused
Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting
    TCP/IP connections on port 5432?

    6.
Where does 'template1' come into this? I take it that it was installed by the package.

How do I get this running.

Just read your reply to the Apple thread…where would you prefer to keep the thread based?

If you look at the boot log, I suspect that Postgres isn't starting at all. To figure out why, can we have a look at the contents of your PostgreSQL8.log from /Library/PostgreSQL/log/ folder ?

      Hello Andy,
      The PostgreSQL.log…
postmaster cannot access the server configuration file "/Library/PostgreSQL8/data/postgresql.conf": No such file or directory

Well /data does exist but has restricted permissions……

      [PowerBook:~] patrickh% ls -l /Library/PostgreSQL8/data
      ls: data: Permission denied
      [PowerBook:~] patrickh% sudo ls -l /Library/PostgreSQL8/data
      Password:
      [PowerBook:~] patrickh%

      …(so why no reply?)
      using Finder I see that,
      I have no access permissions
Owner is postgres with R&W access
Group is postgres with no access
      Others no access

      Hope this helps.
Also before finding your reply to this post I had emailed you seperatley for help, with a link to Apple Discussion regarding this, has other details……

      Many Thanks,
