Actually, the installer works just fine. The Client Tools mess up the instalation to the point where the database does not auto start when the computer is rebooted. I was able to get PostgreSQL 8.0.2 installed OK, and rebooted the computer. Postgres was restarted. After running the Service Manager (which apeared to do nothing), Create Database (which created a database OK) and Create User (which crashed), I rebooted the computer again. This time PostgreSQL did not auto start. I reinstalled the Postgres Startup Item.pkg, and that made no difference. I reinstalled the PostgreSQL.mpkg (after deselecting the Client Tools) and now the auto start works OK. My advice for MacOS X 10.4: Don't use the Client Tools.

Does anyone know if the installer tools work on MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger)?
