Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. Met up with the folks from the Windsor Unix Users Group this evening to talk to them about PenguiCon. Turnout at their meeting was a little on the light side, only eight people, but interest in the con was high and it look like a number of them will attend. I didn't get any pre- registrations at the meeting, I think mostly due to not enough prepatory communication amongst the group and to the relatively high cost of the regisration fee when converted to Canadian dollars. However, we will want to have a Users' Group table for them, which they will staff at some times during the con. (By my count, this makes = three groups which we have confirmation on a users' table: MDLUG, = WUUG, and the Robotics group.) = I also solicited for panel members and for Installfest help, and we = may get a few volunteers out of that. I gave them both Susan = Harris's and Rich Clark's e-mail addresses as contacts for panels and Installfest. A couple of the group members are instructors at the St. Clair = College of Applied Arts and Technology (where the meeting was held) and have volunteered to handout flyers for the con in their classes. Fellow Linux/Unix Enthusiasts, = (My apologies to those that have seen some of this message before, there is new information added, so I have sent it to the entire LUG mailing list.) Please let me introduce myself, I'm Steve Gutterman, the PenguiCon = LUG Wrangler, and my only job is to work with interested Linux User = Groups and other IT/computer related groups to bring them PenguiCon = information, and make it easy for them to participate in the con. So wha= t IS PenguiCon? PenguiCon, which is scheduled for May 2-4 of this year in the Detroit area, will be the first combined Linux/Unix Expo and = Science Fiction & Fantasy convention. We have guests and sessions in both areas, and a crossover track that combines both. A bit of = something for everyone! I'd like to give your group the latest informati= on on PenguiCon, as well as provide my contact information for any further = questions you may have. The Guest of Honor list for PenguiCon is: Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld novels. Eric Raymond, author of The Cathedral and the Bazaar. Pete Abrams, author and artist of Sluggy Freelance. J.D. Frazer (Illiad), author and artist behind User Friendly. Rob Malda (CmdrTaco), co-founder of Slashdot. We also have several other guests who will be attending, including = Eric Flint, author and founder of the Baen Free Library. Clif Flynt, TCL guru. Jeff Bates, the other cofounder of slashdot. And still other popular authors and Unix/Linux/Open Source experts. I'd be very interested in providing your group with more con information= and flyers / registration forms, along with pre-registration discount = coupons, which are good until April 15th for $5 off PenguiCon pre- registrations. I also have information available on proposed sessions = and panel topics, and would be interested in answering questions from your members on how you can both benefit from, and participate in, the = con events. We are actively seeking knowledgeable and credentialed = experts among the LUG communities to be presenters and session = panelists at the con. = We have a number of special arrangements specifically for, and open = only to, official LUGs and IT/computer groups. Each LUG will be provided= a table in a common area (in the same room with the dealers and art show)= , which they can use for recruiting, providing information, CD distribution= , or any other purpose. Each member of a LUG will also be offered discount= = coupons for pre-registration. We are also offering to lock in a Birds Of = A = Feather session at the con for any group that pre-registers at least four= = people, and two hotel rooms. Having a BOF session means that your group can reserve one of the convention function rooms for any type of session or meeting of your choice. Normally, BOF sessions are available = on a first-come, first-served basis by having any attendee sign up for = them at the con. We currently have 12 BOF slots available. PenguiCon will also have both wired and wireless Ethernet networking, along with a T-1 Internet connection. If your group members are interest= ed in making use of the 802.11b network while at the con, we suggest that th= ey pre-register and specifically reserve a poolside hotel room as soon as = possible. While we are working to have 802.11b available throughout the = hotel, the 'wings and tower' configuration of the hotel makes this very = difficult. We will be concentrating on providing wireless net access in the = pool area first, and then will work out from there. = I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that we'll see many of your group members at PenguiCon. The main www.sf.net webpage has a login li= nk on the left and you can create a new account there (direct create new account link is next to the login, I believe). 3) Figure out how to use ssh and scp. (Respectively, they're the "secure shell" and "secure copy" programs. They're like encrypted versions of te= lnet and ftp.) Linux users have these installed by default. On windows machines, there's a nice package called "putty" that some bilingual (windows and BSD) folks in england wrote. It does ssh, and yo= u can download it here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ (Don't forget to click "use scp" instead of the default "use telnet" each time you try to make a connection. No, I don't know why that's the defau= lt, telnet comes built in to windows...) There's a similar program "puscp" from the same people, which does "secur= e copy" of files. You'll probably need to set that up too. Make sure you can login to "shell.sf.net" with ssh, and copy files to and from your directory with scp. 4) Email me and tell me your new sourceforge username, and the list of pa= ges you figured out you want to own (back in step #1). I'll grant you access= to the penguicon project, and create a subdirectory for you under penguicon,= and link your pages into it. (They don't have to immediately go live, just t= ell me when you want those links to be added to the menu. In the meantime, y= ou can access your pages as penguicon.sf.net://username/pagename.shtml (wher= e both "username" and "pagename.shtml" are not to be taken literally). I'l= l drop a "skeleton.shtml" in your directory so you can what an empty page w= ith the menubar and border and everything looks like. (It's pretty small.) P.S. When I link the pages into the site, I can make it look like they'r= e in the main directory. Your subdirectory will be world readable, but nobody actually has to know it's there if you want to just use it as scratch spa= ce. If you do want to link more pages from your sub-page, you can always just create more pages in your directory and link them using the username/page= name syntax above. If you want to stop people form listing the contents of yo= ur directory with their web browsers, just put an index.shtml file in the directory and they'll see that instead. 5) For easier access to your web subdirectory, ssh to "shell.sf.net" and login, and type the following command: ln -s /home/groups/p/pe/penguicon/$USER webpage Now you can just go "cd webpage" when you login to jump straight to your = web subdirectory. You can also scp files into and out of the directory by go= ing "scp filename.shtml penguicon.sf.net:webpage", or "scp penguicon.sf.net:webpage/filename.shtml blah.shtml". Now you can just go "cd penguin" to get to your sub-page under penguicon.= =20 No, don't try it yet, it isn't there yet. I'll put it there in the next step. Did I miss anything? The Metro Detroit LUG has been particularly responsive and eager to be a presense at Penguicon, and I'd like to try and leverage tha= t. = What would be your thoughts on inviting them to co-sponsor the installfes= t, and having them distribute some type of Linux CDs at the con? They're = talking about charging for the CDs (I'm assuming just to recoup media costs, = but I'll verify that) at their LUG tables, but I was thinking that if we offer to have = them cosponsor the installfest, they should provide CDs there without charge. A new list just started up, and I'm cc'ing the other three lists so you a= ll=20 know about it. Penguicon-general is where the concom hang out and do general convention=20 organizing. Penguicon-panels is Susan's arena for getting the panel tracks organized.= =20 Panels aren't on the schedule until Susan says so, she's the one who hand= s=20 out timeslots. That said, it helps if you can actually arrange to staff = a=20 panel you submit to her, rather than just presenting her with an idea wit= h no=20 warm bodies. (Birds of a feather sessions, perhaps...) penguiconpublic (no dash) is a relatively new group for general conventio= n=20 attendees (nothing to do with running the thing, although many of the peo= ple=20 who do are subscribed) to hang out and interact. And penguicon-tech is the new one, where geek-side stuff can get organize= d. =20 LUG wrangling, computer gaming, network infrastructure, brainstorming, al= l=20 that. John Guest is in charge of network infrastructure, and I'm current= ly=20 the point of contact as far as personell are concerned (until I find some= =20 poor fool to delegate it to). Finished, staffed panels go to Susan at=20 penguicon-panels (you're not on the schedule until Susan says so; she's t= he=20 one who hands out timeslots).
