-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi again ! I will dare another question.. Would it be possible to have the small green light under the screen on the G3 (the one doing the heart-beat when sleeping) switched on when the screen is blanked ? I see there is a heartbeep sound, which i gather is rather annoying, but just switching the small green light on when the screen is blanked would give an indication that the computer is still running. This would be nice, now that my hdd is silent ! Thanks for your work, Cheers, Karl Frank Lichtenheld wrote: > On Fri, May 27, 2005 at 02:18:40PM +0100, Karl Kashofer wrote: > >>So I tried to get a newer pbbuttonsd version from cvs, but failed to >>compile it. >>./autogen.h runs, but ./configure failw at line 5071 with a syntax error >>(the line with AM_PATH_ALSA) >> >>When I remove this line (#) it runs through the config, but make fails >>with no rule for Makefile.in >> >>So, I would really like to get laptop-mode and pbbuttons working nicely >>together on a powerbook Pismo, but I seem to need some help. >> >>Help anyone ? > > > You could try the newer pbbuttonsd packages from Debian experimental > (See http://packages.debian.org/experimental/admin/pbbuttonsd). -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi again ! I seem to have gone in circles... I have now removed "apt-get remove laptop-mode" and set AC profile to powersave in powerprefs. Works fine now, hdd is silent and spins down. - From the scripts I gather that /etc/power/event.d/laptop-mode does run "laptop-mode stop" every time when AC power is detected and /usr/sbin/laptop-mode is present regardless of what power profile is selected. Maybe you could make that conditional on the power profile ? Anyway, thanks a lot for your time, (sorry for wasting it..) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi again ! I have done some more research. First: Here is the problem as I reported it on the Ubuntu forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=36976 Then: I have noticed the following: When I start "laptop-mode start" or when I unplug AC power the hdd noise stops, and the hdd spins down after some time. So actually all I want seems to happen when the system is on battery power. Now all I want is to have the computer behave the same when its on AC. I tried the Laptop_Mode_Always_On setting in the laptop-mode script. I also have set AP power profile to "powersave" but none of these help. I am not sure, but maybe pbbuttonsd 6.6 does not use the laptop-mode script, but uses its own one ? (As i see on some google thread you once had to use a separate laptop-mode script) So question is: Why can I not make the laptop do the same when on battery and on AC ? Where do I set the configuration parameters ? (e.g. spin-down time) ? I will try to install the debian packages for gtkpbbuttonsd, powerprefs and pbbuttonsd from the debian experimental, and tell you how badly it breaks later on. Thanks for your time, Cheers, Karl Frank Lichtenheld wrote: > On Fri, May 27, 2005 at 02:18:40PM +0100, Karl Kashofer wrote: > >>So I tried to get a newer pbbuttonsd version from cvs, but failed to >>compile it. >>./autogen.h runs, but ./configure failw at line 5071 with a syntax error >>(the line with AM_PATH_ALSA) >> >>When I remove this line (#) it runs through the config, but make fails >>with no rule for Makefile.in >> >>So, I would really like to get laptop-mode and pbbuttons working nicely >>together on a powerbook Pismo, but I seem to need some help. >> >>Help anyone ? > > > You could try the newer pbbuttonsd packages from Debian experimental > (See http://packages.debian.org/experimental/admin/pbbuttonsd). It is difficult to track the problem down with the information in your report. I just updated the version in CVS, maybe you like to try again. On the other hand I would also recommend to use the debian package from Frank Lichtenheld available in the debian experimental tree. It should also be usable with ubuntu. You should also install the package laptop-mode-tools which contains the latest laptopmode script. Pbbuttonsd should automatically detect and use it. Best Regards Matthias |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi ! I have had a problem with hdd noise which I finally could get rid of by running laptop-mode. However: there seems to be a problem with laptop-mode an pbbuttons, as after every reboot or when waking up from sleep the laptop-mode settings get lost, and I have to run laptop-mode start and hdparm -S 2 /dev/hda again. So I tried to get a newer pbbuttonsd version from cvs, but failed to compile it. ./autogen.h runs, but ./configure failw at line 5071 with a syntax error (the line with AM_PATH_ALSA) When I remove this line (#) it runs through the config, but make fails with no rule for Makefile.in So, I would really like to get laptop-mode and pbbuttons working nicely together on a powerbook Pismo, but I seem to need some help. Help anyone ? Hi, I just released pbbuttonsd version 0.6.10. This release fixes the problem that under certain circumstances pbbuttonsd causes 100% of CPU load. The power key of recent aluminum powerbooks is now supported and the ASLA mixer module got an improved error management. The evdev module is no longer loaded automatically. The system must have been set up properly before using pbbuttonsd. The program could be found at http://pbbuttonsd.sourceforge.net Have fun Matthias |

Ok, I believe it, but the new NoTapTyping function has nothing to do with it. It's an deadlock in the main input routine, if someone unloads the usbhid module which breaks all open fileandles to related event devices. I restructured the main input loop and created a beta version which could be downloaded from http://pbbuttons.sourceforge.net. First tests showed that it works but till now I got feedback only from one affected user. So your feedback is highly welcome. Best Regards Matthias |

That is absolutely correct. This was also poited out in the Changelog as you could see in the following cut-out: 2005-03-22 0.6.7-9 * client list extended with name and flags. If a client wants to register it must provide a name and optional additional flags. ! Please pay attention to the changed ipc_init() interface. ! ! Clients linked with an old libpbb will work as usual but ! ! you should move to the extended interface with your next ! ! release. Future extensions will depend on the extra data. ! Please blame the programmers of kmilo to update theire program ;-) Best Regards Matthias |

Hi, This may seem weird but in building kdeutils-3-4-0, specifically kmilo = I'm getting the following build error: int ipc_init(char*, init, int) error: too few arguments to function It is pointing to line 51 in /usr/include/pbbipc.h: int ipc_init (char *name, int mode, int reg); kmilo builds fine by rolling back to pbbuttonsd-0.6.7 (I didn't try with = 0.6.8, but I assume that it would result in the same error). Fyi, I'm using Gentoo 2005.1 on a Al PowerBook G4 (pre January 2005 = model). Is this a know problem? |

Hi, I just released GtkPBButtons 0.6.7. This release learned how to work around the Gtk+ bug which caused some problems with translucency of GtkPBButtons popup windows. Thanks to Soeren Sonnenburg for solve this and his patch. Soeren also contributed a new theme which can be found on pbbuttons homepage. By accident this theme is also included in the current release distribution. Please don't wonder about the file size. I will remove it again with the next release. Extra themes will be distributed seperately in future. Further contribution are welcome. Best Regrads Matthias |

Comments PowerBook3.1 (G3 Pismo) 2.6.8 none PBButtonsd version 0.6.9 PowerBook3.2 (G4 TiBook) 2.6.11 rare PBButtonsd version 0.6.9 I had one definite hard lock, and haven't had any since switching off NoTapTyping. It occurred while moving the mouse cursor and typing at the same time. It feels like it could be a race somewhere, but I couldn't tell you where. Also, I know that the other user who was having more difficulty than I was using 2.6.11 as well, perhaps there's a problem with this kernel that's exposed by the NoTapTyping feature? -Joe |

Hi, I can hardly believe that pbbuttonsd is able to lock up the system and I tested the NoTapTyping feature under harsh conditions but lets do some statistics to get to the bottom of this effect. Machine Kernel Lockups? Comments PowerBook3.1 (G3 Pismo) 2.6.8 none PBButtonsd version 0.6.9 <fill in your record here> Does the lockup also happen if the machine is idle for a while or does it always happen during daily work ? Hi, After so much trouble some good news. Some people reported a problem with translucency and GtkPBButtons. Soeren Sonnenburg found a solution. This is actually a GTK+ problem with GTK_Frame but GtkPBButtons have been changed not to use this function any longer. The attached patch should solve the problem. Please have a look and check if the problem is really gone. Copy the patch into the gtkpbbuttons/src directory and apply it with patch -p2 <gtkpbbuttons-translucency.diff Best Regards Matthias |

Hi! We've been getting reports of lockups with the last two versions of pbbuttonsd, 0.6.8 and 0.6.9. For both versions, turning off the NoTapTyping feature seems to fix the problem. Hi, A new version of GtkPBButtons has been released. The main improvement of this release is that it takes care of other running instances of GtkPBButtons. The new launched program replaces the running instance so that no more than one GtkPBButtons process is in memory at the same time. The source could be found at: http://pbbuttons.sourceforge.net Best Regards Matthias |
