Okay i've looked inside the source files and found how it works. It's okay now, everything has been translated to french and seems to run smoothly (but I'll do all the tests before releasing it). I'm going to add some code now and correct some bugs I encountered, Ill send it to this mailing list as soon as it is finished. _________________________________________________________________ Comme 9 millions de français, créez un compte Hotmail ! http://www.windowslive.fr/hotmail/default.asp |

Hi, First thank you for this great program. I know it from some times now, but I couldn't use it. English is not a problem for me, but for my customers and friends it is. So now that I have a little spare time I decided to translate it in my language (french) and correct the bugs I'll encounter. So I retranslated from ground since I saw that there was a bug in the old one. I'm pretty sure my new version won't have any problem. In fact the translator of the old french file made the mistake of translating the "Subject:" keyword, while it is a special header for mails that you must NOT translate. I translated the whole CHM help file too, licence included. I don't have compiled it yet because I don't had the time to look for the program you used, but I think it is Html Help Workshop by Microsoft. But now I would like to test my translation, and I've found absolutely nowhere how to do that (and I'm wondering how the network version can be used then if translation can't be choosen). I've crawled all the txt files and old mailing list, no information about this subject. And I need it. Because I want my translation to be perfect, and I want to update the screenshot in the help file with translated ones. I wait for your answer, and hope to be able to use this program in my language soon :-) _________________________________________________________________ Votre contact a choisi Hotmail, l'e-mail nouvelle génération. I haven't received any updated translations for Panic Button v2.5 yet. I'm intending to release it soon, so I'm going to set a deadline for receipt of translations of 30th April. I'll be releasing v2.5 as soon after 30th April as I can. Russ |

I have just updated the .pot file for version 2.5 (attached). This will be the last update, so please check your translations and update them where required. Also, the French translation appears to be causing a bug, so I shall remove it in version 2.5 unless I get a new version. Version 2.5 beta 2 files will be uploaded to SourceForge.net shortly. Russ |

Translators, Version 2.5 introduces some new strings, so I've attached an updated .pot file. Please get your updated .po/.mo files to me ASAP. A beta of version 2.5 is available for download - the only changes to this will be bug-fixes, so if your L10N files work with the beta, they will work with the final version. Russ |

That's because the Panic_Button.pot file changed. I re-worded those labels slightly to make them more understandable. This was done some time ago, but I've just updated it to make sure it's completely up to date. You need to get the latest version of Panic_Button.pot, either via CVS, or downloaded via the web CVS browser [1]. Once you have it, you need to update your catalogue. To do this in poEdit, do the following: 1. Load the .po file 2. Go to Catalog -> Update from POT file... 3. Select the Panic_Button.pot file 4. poEdit will show you which strings have been added & removed. Click OK 5. Make any required updates & save Russ [1] http://panicbutton.cvs.sourceforge.net/panicbutton/panicbutton/Panic_Button.pot?view=log |

Translators, I've not found any issues with 2.4 beta 3, so I'm looking to release version 2.4 as soon as I can. Please get your .po and .mo files to me for inclusion as soon as you can, and before Friday 8th December at the latest. Russ PS: The following is from António Rainho, and describes how he worked around a problem. It may be of use to others, but I don't know how to properly fix his problem. Also, please ensure that any replies go to the list, not just to me. You may have to use the "Reply all" function in your e-mail client. ------ I had another problem : at first the accented letters, although correctly written in POEDIT, appeared with some strange letters as you can see in Print Screen “PanicButton_portuguese” attached. Then I understood that to get the right letters in the screen I had to change the charset in the Catalog POEDIT settings from utf-8 to iso8859-1 and then the accented letters begun to appear correctly. The problem seems to be solved but, after that, when I try to load the pt_PT catalog file again, I get an error “Failed to convert file contents to Unicode” and it’s impossible to edit it. Of course I can always have a source catalog in utf-8 and only change to iso8859-1 to get the compiled .mo file, but do you know of any solution to this problem ? |

Hi, I've fixed the bug that meant that translations with non-ASCII characters couldn't be loaded. It turned out to be a simple fix, but only worked after I'd upgraded my Python installation to 2.5 I'm now working through bugs caused by upgrading to Python 2.5 & wxPython 2.7. Once I've done that, I'll be uploading a new beta for people to test. Russ |

I've been looking into the problem that people have when trying to use localised versions of Panic Button. It appears to be caused by using non-ASCII characters in the localised .po file, and as far as I can tell, is a bug in Python's gettext implementation. I'm upgrading to Python 2.5, but I don't know fi this will fix it or not. If not, I'll be filing a bug. I wanted to ask if it was possible/feasible to use only ASCII characters in localisations? I know next to nothing about foreign languages, so I have no idea whether or not it is feasible to replace, for instance, an e-acute with an e. Is this feasible, or will it render the translations entirely unusable? Russ |

I've just released beta 2 of version 2.4. This will be the final beta before version 2.4, so please test it, especially with the localisations. I was hoping that %c would work, since according to the manual it returns "Locale's appropriate date and time representation.", but when I tried it I got the date in American format (ie MM/DD/YYYY). I think for the time being I'm going to stick with asctime, which unfortunately ignores locale settings, but because it returns a date with the month name, it should at least make sense to everyone. I've just committed a revised PanicButton.pot file to CVS [1], along with some other changes. I've also released a first beta of version 2.4. My plan is to have no GUI changes in 2.4, so this beta can be used to get screen shots for localised help files. And, since it adds code to use a localised help file if one is present, it can also be used for testing them ;-) My main aim now is to spend some time with Inno Setup and to work out the best way to localise the installer. I'd like to get a version with full i18n support released as soon as possible. Once I've got l10n support in the installer, then I'll be looking at getting translations and releasing. I agree entirely. I had intended to say that in my original post, but obviously forgot :-) We need to choose a language to be the default language to use if the local language isn't available, and English seems a good choice, for two reasons: 1. The original, definitive, version is English - everything else is a derivative 2. Many people across the world speak English. I *think* it's the widest-known language, so there's a good chance that the user will be able to understand the messages, even if English is not their default language. > > The thing is, my knowledge of languages other than English is > > non-existant. I've just compiled a first beta of version 2.4, with some limited localisation support. Because it's only likely to be of use to people on this list, I've put it on my personal web space: http://www.phillipsuk.org/tmp/PanicButton_2-4_BETA-1.zip MD5 sum is fa0dac4181520d081cedf2fccacbac9c PanicButton_2-4_BETA-1.zip A few notes on this: This is the "network" version - there's no installer. Note that if you don't start it with any parameters, the only way to kill it is through Task Manager. If you create a batch file with the line: PanicButton.exe config exit and run the batch file, you'll have Setup and Exit options enabled. In the zip file is a file named "out.mo" - this is the gettext binary. If you compile [1] your translation, name it out.mo and replace the existing out.mo with yours, you should find that all the strings are in your local language. I've done a little bit of experimenting with gettext on Windows. The following couple of lines of code return a country and region code: s = locale.getdefaultlocale () print s[0] With the regional settings set to English (UK), this returns en_GB. With them set to English (US), it returns en_US. This all seems entirely logical ;-) My thinking for l10n files is to put them all in a "locale" directory (this includes gettext .mo files, localised help files, etc). My plan is that the program will first look for a file that exactly matches the locale returned by the above code. If such a file does not exist, then it will look for a file that matches the first part (en in this case), since that will probably be "good enough", if not ideal. An example may help to illustrate this. Suppose we have an en_GB.mo file (containing strings used in the application) and a en_GB.chm file (help file). These contain text in British English. If a user in the US were to use Panic Button, and there were no en_US.mo and en_US.chm files, then Panic Button would fall back to using en_GB.mo and en_GB.chm. This isn't ideal, since Americans spell various things slightly differently (I can't think of a relevant example, but "colour" in English is "color" in American). The spellings should be close enough that the user will be able to use the program without difficulty. The thing is, my knowledge of languages other than English is non-existant. I'm pretty sure that this would be fine in the English-speaking world, but I don't know about anywhere else. I imagine there are German and Austrian variants of German. Are they close enough that a speaker of one would have no difficulty if presented with an interface in the other language? Russ |

Now that I have other people helping me with Panic Button, I thought I should give you some credit :-) I have therefore added a CREDITS.txt file to CVS [1]. This file will be included in every distribution, and the contents will be added to the help file, as an extra page. The intention is that this will list everyone that has contributed in some way. However, I don't want to add names without permission, so it currently only has Justin Masters. If you would like to be included, please let me know how you would like to be listed. There are no hard and fast rules, but I'm looking at a single line. I don't mind including web site URLs or e-mail addresses, but bear in mind that spam robots will almost certainly find any e-mail addresses that are included. Russ [1] http://tinyurl.com/qr4hh |

Hi Russ, I have just uploaded the preliminary files of my translated version of=20 Panic Button 2.3 to my fileserver: http://www.a2b-consulting.com/panicbutton/downloads/Panic_Button_de_2-3.e= xe http://www.a2b-consulting.com/panicbutton/downloads/Panic_Button_de_2-3.z= ip http://www.a2b-consulting.com/panicbutton/downloads/Panic_Button_de_2-3_s= rc.zip I hope the above links don't get mangled too much, otherwise check out http://www.a2b-consulting.com/index.php?option=3Dcom_content&task=3Dview&= id=3D18&Itemid=3D27 I'd appreciate it if you could upload these files to the Sourceforge=20 repository though (as soon as that's done I'd change the links on my=20 site too), as that's probably the better place to keep them - my traffic=20 quota at Strato obviously can't compete with that of Sourceforge ;-) As mentioned, it's a preliminary release - I invite comments on all the=20 changes I have made, starting from a slightly re-designed helpfile=20 (different css file, screenshots from an XP system, as I regard that to=20 be pretty much commonplace these days, added (yet really, really small)=20 index, modified the javascript) over to a couple of changes in the=20 sources itself (different time format). Whoever downloads and uses that version should keep in mind that it's=20 actually a "breakout" version: the installer currently only supports=20 German (I have included translated InfoBefore.de.txt and=20 InfoAfter.de.txt files as well as a slightly modified gpl.de.txt - at a=20 later point we still have to pick up on that point of providing a=20 directory structure that caters for different languages, essentially=20 allowing for a single installer one day to support multiple languages)=20 and I'm not quite sure if I've really included all the files required=20 (it just happens to work when I use it on my machine - no warranty that=20 it works on any other). However: we now have the first "internationalised" version of Panic=20 Button. Time to start a bit of marketing of that thingy in Germany, I=20 guess ;-)) Talking about which, I've also created a forum on my website for the=20 discussion of German translation issues, so as not to clutter the=20 official Panic Button bug report area for this "inofficial" German 2.3=20 version: http://www.a2b-consulting.com/index.php?option=3Dcom_joomlaboard&Itemid=3D= 28 (yes, obviously all in German over there... after all, that's probably=20 the language most folks speak that stumble accross problems with the=20 German translation ;-)) Kind regards Gerard --=20 From a2b Consulting GmbH Gerard Jensen R=F6dingsmarkt 39 mailto:ger...@a2... 20459 Hamburg http://www.a2b-consulting.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tel: 040-657934-60 Fax: 040-657934-62 Handy: 0160-8050313 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
