Hi. I am guessing you are using the (now rather old) Windows installer for OSW. Did you install version of Tck/Tk/Iwidgets that comes with it? There are instructions here: http://osw.sourceforge.net/html/INSTALL.win If it's still not working and giving the error below, please let me know. Thanks -Amar On Sat, 26 Mar 2011 16:50:28 -0500, "Mr. Muir" wrote: I'm having a problem getting OpenSoundWorld started. When I run it, I'm getting two blank windows up on the screen. Yes, I understand - the user interface is the trickiest part. Is there a beta or any design docs for the new interface ? Maybe you can tell us what are the differences from the old interface ? Will it be more stable ? I wonder about posting bugs when your efforts are moving to a new version. Should I really bother ? About "/default0" : I didn't like the first time experience because the program threw up all this new stuff at once (including an auto-close splash image which was partly covered by the help tip window). It's too much for a new user to usefully absorb at once. I think less is more. Let the user drive the interface. (Propellorheads Reason 3.0 also opens a blank document on start.. grr..) If the user is lost they will notice the "help" menu sitting there. Maybe my case wasn't typical because I spent quite a few hours reading the online docs before trying to run the program. But those things become more annoying when the program is unstable and you want to shutdown and restart often. Anyway, a preference option would be good. I already noticed that double-click opens properties, but I'll have to play with that more. With Amar's Tcl.zip, I got OSW working. I had to extend my path like so: path=%path%;D:\Programs\Tcl\bin But OSW seems pretty buggy. Maybe there are more bugs due to the way I've installed Tcl. I encountered these issues: - after loading a patch I can't edit it sometimes (I realised this could just be the edit mode, the pencil/key icon..) - window positions and sizes are not remembered - doesn't remember the preference not to open the first help window - There is apparently no option to not open the "/default0" patch on startup - playing with Comb feedback delay gives strange "delay exceeds length" messages and seems to take OSW to 100% cpu sometimes - just playing with the sample loop demo seizes up often and no sound comes out Maybe it works better on linux. Maybe later I'll try Slackware. Anton. |

Yes, that would be great! I have ADSL so emailing me a zip would be ok. Amar, I redownloaded from http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/osw/osw-1.2.7.win.exe and got the same error message for these install paths: - D:\Programs\OpenSoundWorld - D:\Programs\OpenSoundWorld\ - D:\Programs\Open Sound World - C:\Program Files\Open Sound World I think the only files needed are - tcl82.dll - tk82.dll Maybe someone here who has it installed could chuck me those files ? Hi Anton- That's a new one, actually. I'm guessing it might be a bug in the installer on the alternate path (D:\Programs...), or a corrupt image - the latter is the only thing I can think of that would lead to the 16-bit error message. itcl82 is pretty darn stale, I'd like to get rid of it. Anyone have OSW working w/ Active State Tcl on Windows? -Amar > Hi, > > This is my first attempt to install OSW, > and during the install, just after the dialog > asking whether to install Tcl or not, I got this > error message: > > Can't run 16-bit Windows program > > Cannot find file D:\Programs\OpenSoundWorld\itcl82.exe (or one of its > components). > Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required > libraries are available. > > Examining the directory shows this file exists briefly. > When I grab it and run it myself I get the same error. > > Could anyone recommend a way to diagnose what's preventing the > file from running ? > > Regards, > > Anton. > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Take Surveys. Hi, This is my first attempt to install OSW, and during the install, just after the dialog asking whether to install Tcl or not, I got this error message: Can't run 16-bit Windows program Cannot find file D:\Programs\OpenSoundWorld\itcl82.exe (or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. Examining the directory shows this file exists briefly. When I grab it and run it myself I get the same error. Could anyone recommend a way to diagnose what's preventing the file from running ? Regards, Anton. |

Hi David- There are mailing lists hosted by sourceforge that generally seem to work even if the site goes down (I will check out the forum issue as soon as I get a chance). Feel free to post directly to osw...@li..., or subscribe at https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/osw-users (you don't need an SF account for this). Let me know if that's giving you trouble, too. As for osx problems, I am trying to collect and address them ahead of the next release (hopefully soon), but generally I can't reproduce them here (i.e., it works fine), so it takes a while to get to the root cause. For the segfault, can you run in debug mode (i.e., "osw --debug" from the Terminal window) and when the segfault occurs, type "bt" for backtrace and send me the output? Thanks -Amar ----- Original Message ----- From: <dah...@gm...> To: <fa...@pt...> Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 12:12 PM Subject: website message: other > I\'m trying to get help with osw. Hi there- I have definitely encountered your symptoms when using E-MU 1820M and 1616M sound cards (my regular performance setup includes in 1616M) - though not as frequently as you describe. One additional piece of info about your system that might be helpful: are you running a multiprocessor and/or hyperthreading ON? I will take a look at this area again (there are several hacks to our windows audio interface for E-MU cards) - it also might be worth trying out a new build from the source code if you can do that. Meantime, let's keep in touch on this. -Amar > Very intriguing program! > I'm principally involved in live looping/processing of electric guitar, & > this seems an excellent candidate for replacing hardware boxes with custom > patches; however..I'm having some difficulties with it! > I can set up delay patches, eg, which will work for maybe twenty, even > thirty seconds, before emitting a vulgar farting noise, & then quitting on > me! Very intriguing program! I'm principally involved in live looping/processing of electric guitar, & this seems an excellent candidate for replacing hardware boxes with custom patches; however..I'm having some difficulties with it! I can set up delay patches, eg, which will work for maybe twenty, even thirty seconds, before emitting a vulgar farting noise, & then quitting on me! Demo patches using white noise/brown noise often just give assorted farts, apparently unrelated to any button pressing on the interface! I've some programming experience (undergrad level!) and a lot of musical processing experience, but I just can't seem to bridge the gap here, even with the help files. Am I missing something fundamental? Running v.1.2.7, on 3.4GHz WinXP machine, 2GB RAM, EMU 1820M soundcard, acres of hard drive etc. I've got a demo of Max/MSP, which I'm getting results on, but it's doing my eyesight in! Hoping to get to grips with this enough to maybe contribute! Sorry to be so vague with my problem(s), but it's hard to know where to start! |

I have built OSW on debian several times with no significant headaches. I think there may have been some problems before in locating certain header files (debian puts some things in different places than the RH type distros do). But I think the necessary changes were merged back into the configure script / makefiles. Compiling the source from CVS is probably the best way to go. I guess I just don't trust alien to do the right thing. :) So far the CVS head has been stable. Of course you will need to make sure all the right packages (and the -dev versions of each) are installed... tcl/tk, itcl / iwidgets, pthreads, alsa? Write to the list again if you get stuck.... All, Well, I'm trying to set up OSW again. I have yet to get it working. Planet CCRMA/Fedora Core 3 was my last failed attempt. This time the target is Ubuntu Linux. That means RPMs are foreign animals. Should I just try to use alien on the binary RPM and hope for the best? Any reason to prefer building from sources? Is there really no tarball? Has anyone else tried to get OSW up on a Debian-based distribution? regards, -jim |

Hi all- Anyone else headed to ICMC 2005? If so, I might try to have an OSW dinner or happy hour for those interested. Please let me know so I can plan accordingly (actually, I'll probably have the happy hour anyway ;). -Amar ps - I can probably show some samples of the new UI in development... |
