How about bitstream vera mono sans - public license form what I understand
and I use it in notepad++ and like it a lot
this excerpt from wikepedia:
**************
*Vera* is a group typeface <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typeface> (font)
with a liberal license <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/License>. It was
designed by Jim Lyles
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jim_Lyles&action=edit&redlink=1>
from Bitstream <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitstream_Inc.>, and it is
closely based on Bitstream Prima
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bitstream_Prima&action=edit&redlink=1>,
for which Lyles was also responsible. It is a TrueType
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueType> font with full hinting instructions
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueType#Hinting_language>, which improve
its rendering quality on low-resolution devices such as computer monitors.
The font has also been repackaged as a Type 1 PostScript font
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostScript_fonts#Type_1>, called *Bera*, for
LaTeX <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX> users.[1]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitstream_Vera#cite_note-1>
Vera consists of serif <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif>, sans-serif
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sans-serif>, and monospace
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monospaced_font> fonts. The Bitstream Vera
Sans Mono typeface in particular is suitable for technical work, as it
clearly distinguishes 'l' (lowercase L) from '1' (one) and 'I' (uppercase
i), and '0' (zero) from 'O'.
