It is my opinion that this is a plot to take the custodianship of Medical Health information out of Physicians' hand - and put it in Telus' hands - where they can use it at will to plunder for marketing information, etc. I believe that there is already some history to support my paranoia. The telecommunications company showed off its Telus Health Spaceservice Wednesday, an online consumer platform aimed at givingCanadians access and management of their own health information.Telus has partnered with computing giant Microsoft to develop theservice. > "We know our health organizations are doing a fantastic job ofcapturing information, but we as individuals don't always know andaren't always as up to speed with where our information's at," saidRandy Duguay, Telus director of health solutions. He gave the example of a mother trying to keep track of her child'spaper- based immunization records. > The company says Health Space gives Canadians the ability tocreate, store and manage their family's health information in asecure application. With smartphones and tablet computers, theinformation can always be at their fingertips. Telus says 55 per cent of Canadians track their medical records onpaper, 25 per cent by memory or not all. In the United Kingdom, 96per cent of the population has an electronic health record while inCanada, that number is only 37 per cent. > Two thousand Telus employees are the first to use the service in apartnership with Sheppellfgi, a provider of corporate worker-healthprograms, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The employees have volunteered to track their own cardiovascularhealth using the application. Duguay demonstrated by taking his blood pressure and showing howthe results were electronically noted and graphed along withprevious readings on his personal record. > "This is just the first stage. There are going to be other parts ofthe solution such as even helping people with their mental-healthissues and medications management, where as individuals we can startcapturing that information and sharing it with a pharmacist." Duguay said doctors' offices and hospitals could be connected tothe platform to provide medical records. "We might see governmentsproviding this through their initiatives or we might seedirect-to-consumer models, so we're looking at all of these ideas." > Telus is also working with the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation toimprove responses in emergencies. MedicAlert members, who havelife-threatening allergies and illnesses, will be able to uploadmedical readings, track medications, update records and shareinformation with doctors, pharmacists and paramedics. Telus did not say when the Health Space service will be availablefor wide public use. Patients' medical information is protected by the same type ofsecurity used by banks for their data, Duguay said. > Health Space is the first consumer health platform in Canada togain pre- implementation certification for providing a secureenvironment from Canada Health Infoway, a non-profit group workingto speed the development of electronic health records across Canada,he added. Known best for phones, television and Internet, Telus is ramping upits investment in technology in Canada's $3.5-billion electronichealth-care sector. Its first big move was in 2007 when it acquired electronichealth-care records specialist Emergis for $763 million. The companyformed the foundation of its Telus Health Solutions division. > Vancouversun.com, Thu Nov 4 2010, Section: Business, Byline: Bill Mah, Source: Edmonton Journal > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > The Next 800 Companies to Lead America's Growth: New Video Whitepaper > David G.
