Spoke with my staff. They are OK with our faxing procedure, but the biggest difficulty is collating the pages together for one fax- particularly if labs are attached to a consult, they each have to be added by hand (we are using FinePrint for this). We are open to a system that is simpler and has a good log record, but I think the need we see is the incoming faxes and some way of automating them so that they arrive and are automatically uploaded to the patient chart and to an inbox. If this were part of the bigger picture I think we would be interested. Like I said, some clinics who don't want to set up complex fax software will find this easier to use and that the fax log will become part of the legal documentation automatically. I think this means we can fax out of Oscar with ease from any computer either inside or outside of the clinic? What happens to the incoming faxes- does this allow us to receive faxes electronically to Oscar? To me the biggest issue is not the sending of faxes but the receiving.. We can fax with relative ease using a simple fax modem in the computer and stock Microsoft Fax although it is limited to 3 computers in the clinic (hardware reasons). I am happy not being involved in faxing anyway so this is not a big deal for me. There is a bit of programming work on both the oscarfax server and within OSCAR. We will be developing a full HL7 listener service for OSCAR anyway so this can piggyback on it. Once this work is complete, all oscar users have to do is to direct the fax URL to any oscarfax server. The oscarfax server owner will have to get a fax line, pay for the web hosting service, and probably subscribe to some kind of unlimited long distance service. Anyone can volunteer to run this as a service to all the OCUS members.
