Helo all syncs, I wonder to know if somebody has a kdepim4 plugin for opensync. I've just upgraded and I see that events format of kdepim3 and kdepim4 are quite differente and then plug fails. Best regards LD |

Thank you for taking your time to answer and ask. Maybe a silly question but why not bluetooth? It's much more convenient than USB and IrDA and works more reliably (from my experience). I have been successfully synchronizing k800i (bluetooth) with various Nokias series40 (usb, gnokii plugin). The notebook I have does not have a bluetooth and I don't want BT because the radiation as well as wireless radiation is not very healthy. I mean I can buy a BT-dongle but WHY should I do this, when in Windows I can sync over IR. This same thing should be possible with Linux. The most embarassing thing is that I can connect over IR with wammu and do anything I want, but syncml or opensync can not really sync the stuff. This is the real trouble. I don't think it is a low level issue as the connection works fine. So I need a way to debug and make opensync work. regards |

Hi, thanks for the posting, I'm currently not syncing, but that was how I had synced my Dell Axim x50v way back when. It was a nightmare to configure, and after moving from Fedora to Ubuntu as a daily driver I had not been able to get it syncing again. ok :-( > Well I think I've read enough about opensync, bluetooth, irda and usb syncs. > In fact I can connect and manipulate the phone data with wammu and on the > nokia phone with x/gnokii, so I've expected opensync to work as well as they > do, but :-( disappointed. i won't do this reading again, because last time I had a notebook with bluetooth, so it was easier to find information and I spent 3 days to get everything working and find out that there is a character conversion problem. So to be honest I'm thinking of buying either a Mac machine or a phone that works for sure. But the last thing is in doubt so I tend to the first sollution. I'm pretty buzzy untill september but then I'll take my time to solve the problem once and for ever. I was very glad about 2 years ago with Palm III and Siemens S55. Since then I think I'm in the stone age. That's good. If your machine is a laptop, then just try going into the store and asking. Can't hurt. I'm not quite up to the level where I can get things configured in just a few minutes, that's why I have not yet tried. That, and I'm in the middle of exams. I do understand no problem. > Hm, I read before purchaising the K750i that people managed to sync it, but > for me it did not work. Sync started and aborted in the middle. but I think > it is a kde-pim problem, so subject to another forum. I just googled your phone and I see that people are syncing it, but not without trouble: http://www.mozoft.com/opensync.html http://stefans.datenbruch.de/k750i/ http://distinction.wordpress.com/2006/10/27/k750i-and-kmobiletools/ http://contented.life.eu.org/articles/sony-ericsson-k750i-and-linux/ (grep for "zinger" who says that he synced Evolution with no problems) Great I'll check, thanks for all the good words. kind regards |

Thanks Dotan for taking your time. I wrote a new mail wit hmy problem to open a new thread. Actually I am not getting insulted that easy, so there is no problem with underestimating me. In general it's safer to explain more So, I prefer to enter data on the desktop and then push it to the phone as well. The phone can then mangle it all it wants, the real data is safe in KDE-PIM. When I am without the phone and I must add a phone number I prepend the name with a dot, so that I know to update KDE-PIM when I get home. Ok, it's tricky then :-) But how do you do this then? Can you post the way you do one way sync (maybe reply to me only, or put it into the thread I opened) > Well I tried before, but no attention from anybody, so I used the abbility > to put forward my questions. Happens, especially with unusual hardware that other list members might not be familiar with. But the S-E phone can't be _that_ uncommon, so maybe try again? I'll do for sure. I suppose that one would have to be experienced enough with opensync to know how to get it working withing a reasonable amount of time. Well I think I've read enough about opensync, bluetooth, irda and usb syncs. In fact I can connect and manipulate the phone data with wammu and on the nokia phone with x/gnokii, so I've expected opensync to work as well as they do, but :-( disappointed. That's why I haven't done it yet. No time to learn about opensync BEFORE I have the device. Chicken-Egg scenario. Hm, I read before purchaising the K750i that people managed to sync it, but for me it did not work. Sync started and aborted in the middle. but I think it is a kde-pim problem, so subject to another forum. So the chicken and the egg both are here but seem to be dead. regards |

Hello, I would like to ask you to help me sync kde-pim with my phone SE K750i. I'm using debian testing and opensync 0.22. I can use IRDA or USB, but I preffer IRDA as I don't want to take the usb cable everywhere I go. I tried the slow sync as suggested in many threads, but it seams it is not working. Hi, again, I'm not sure, as I've only ever tried syncing from KDE-PIM to the Syncing is (should be) bi-directional, the one way is copy ;-) phone, not the other way. I suggest that you start a new thread on that subject, so that the whole list can review and find a solution for you. Well I tried before, but no attention from anybody, so I used the abbility to put forward my questions. Actually I think I'm experienced with lists. Emanoil, I assume that you are new to mailing lists so I'll brief you. To start a new thread (solve a new problem) compose a new message in your mail client (do NOT reply to another mail), address it to the list, and write a descriptive subject. Most people only read a very small portion of all the letters in a mailing list, and they choose based on subject. So someone who knows how to sync a Sony-Erikson phone, yet is not interested in giving advice on a cell phone purchase, will not see your question in this thread. Actually I'm primary interested in buying one phone that can sync. The advice to check with the local cell.phone distributor was really good, BUT how can I be sure that everything works at all, when I go to the shop??? I mean I am not sure that the problem is in the phone. I rather think it is a IRDA/OpenSync problem. Or something in my contacts/notes etc. files (may be not UTF or similar) But you are right this is subject to another thread. kind regards |

I'll try this. meanwhile I tried the --slow-sync option syncml-obex-client -s /dev/ircomm0 --identifier "Sony Ericss" --slow-sync --type "text/x-vcard" connection with device succeeded it said connected and with irdadump I see packets transfered and on the phone sync going on, but it is running now for may be an hour or so: 19:56:11.414036 rr:rsp < ca=0e pf=1 nr=7 (2) 19:56:11.917061 rr:cmd > ca=0e pf=1 nr=0 (2) 19:56:11.931705 rr:rsp < ca=0e pf=1 nr=7 (2) 19:56:12.433729 rr:cmd > ca=0e pf=1 nr=0 (2) 19:56:12.448411 rr:rsp < ca=0e pf=1 nr=7 (2) 19:56:12.950396 rr:cmd > ca=0e pf=1 nr=0 (2) I think it is doing actually nothing, how can I check this? At the other hand I have about 300 contats saved in the phone - how long would it take to sync them using slow sync? regards |

I contacted the OP off-list, as we both live in the same area and I had already contacted 3 of the local cellular providers regarding synchronization with KDE-PIM. Two of them invited me to bring the laptop and to try before I purchase. I just have not gotten around to it yet. So if here two of the three cellphone providers were willing to let me try, then I imagine that anywhere else the odds are not so bad. So if I buy a simbian phone it should work with KDE is this what you mean? Two years ago I gave up my Palm III and used a Siemens S55. I was very lucky to sync everything with those devices. Then the Siemens got phisically broken and I replaced it with Nokia 6021. From my employer I've got a SE K750i and a notebook with IR. So now year after I'm kinda "downgraded" because I have a mess of unsynced data. I was planning to talk to my boss to purchaise a new phone or to buy myself one but want to know which model works for 100%. So do all the symbian phones sync wihtout problems OVER IR? thanks to you both for taking your time to contribute to the discussion because I can not stand this situation I have for so long. I've tried kde-pim because at least with the SE K750i the sync starts but fails in the middle, but again no one helps, so thanks a lot. Notes did not sync in EVOLUTION, and I would venture to say that's a problem with evo. You say you are using KDE/Kontact/KDEPIM, which works with all things (notes, todos, calendar). -- xyon |

Hi, thanks for the post, I sync an n95 over Bluetooth with kontact/kdepim using opensync 0.22/libsyncml 0.4.5 without problem. Evolution worked too, but w/o notes. It seems many of the Nokia E and N series behave the same. Ok lets put the question another way around ... Does somebody use IRDA for syncing and can report that it has been successfull and with which Phone/Model. Besides even with bluetooth I was not possible to sync. My new notebook also, does not have bluetooth and I don't want to use it. I simply preffer infrared. Is there a matrix per connection type (USB/BT/IR) of phones that have been reproted to sync properly. And I mean EVERYTHING syncing calender, notes etc in KDE? What you are writing ... it syncs besides notes is also odd, so the sync is not working. thanks again and kind regards |

Hello, Rainer, I'm sorry to mix up into this discussion, but I don't think your answer is an answer of the question that was if you know which of those phones are well supported by linux. I'm writing this, because I have the same problem. I wrote this and no one helped and somebody told me to install opensync 0.21, but still no of my phones is working and I still DO NOT have an answer which phone is recommended to by. I have Nokia 6021 and SE K750i and I want to sync them over IRDA and this seems to be impossible ... Unfortunately no one helps and the answers I get are pretty general like yours. Could you please be more specific? What Phone/Model do you have and how are you syncing this (USB/BT/IR)? Thanks in advance and kind regards Rainer Dorsch <rd...@we...> wrote: Hello, I have no direct answer to your question, but for Debian etch you can get version 0.22 from #opensync deb http://opensync.gforge.punktart.de/repo/opensync-0.21/ etch main deb-src http://opensync.gforge.punktart.de/repo/opensync-0.21/ etch main This might work for more phones than version 0.19. Hello. I'm about to purchase a cellular phone and I want this phone to synchronize the contacts and calendar with my computer via Bluetooth or USB, preferrably Bluetooth. I'm running Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, which has OpenSync 0.19. I'm attracted towards purchasing a Motorola i876 and I notice that it is not in the device lists. Why is there such an absence of Motorola devices from the list? Is there a chance that it will work? Am I much better off purchasing a device knows to work? Are there any recommendations? The devices that are offered "for free" by the local cellular operators are: Nokia 6120C Nokia 6288 Nokia 6267 Motorola K1 Motorola V3m Motorola L7 Motorola K3 Motorola V6 Samsung Z370 Samsung z240 Samsung R500 Samsung R510 SE K770i SE W910i SE K610 SE W660i SE K800i So I can choose from any of these without hurting my pocket. If there are models that are known-excellent support which are not in this list, I may consider paying extra to get one. Also, is there a company that is considered to be more opensource friendly? One that releases datasheets and such? I would tend to prefer that company's products. -- Shachar Or | שחר אור http://ox.freeallweb.org/ |
