I just recently downloaded the latest version of this software after having version 1.3 and I seem to have lost ALL the songs and set lists I accumulated over the last few years. Would you let me know if I can retrieve the songs and set lists, and if so, how? Thank you!

I'm sorry you ran into an issue doing the upgrade. It's the first that I recall hearing about where there is potential data loss. Let's see if we can sort it out.
The songs and set lists are all stored as individual files on your computer. Unless you changed the default location, they should be in the OpenSong\Songs and OpenSong\Sets folders under My Documents (I'm assuming Windows since you marked this in the Windows group). First, check to see if you can find the files there. If so, copy them to other folders so you'll have a backup!
You can also use the Windows Explorer search feature (Windows Key + F) and look for one of the files if you can't find them. The file name is the same as the song or set name.
It's been a long time since I looked at what we did in the V1-V2 upgrade stream. Although we've added things to the song file and set file structure, it should all be forward compatible; I know I regularly open songs I've had since 0.9 that haven't been edited in years. However, I can't recall what changes we made to file and folder handling going from V1 to V2. Perhaps one of the other developers can add their thoughts.
Let us know if you are able to find your files, then we can help you set OpenSong right to use them again.
Hi Mr. Palmer,
Thank you so much for responding. You will have to excuse me because when I sent this request on Sunday it was about 1:30 a.m., so I was not thinking to be more detailed in my request. I have checked under Program Files to find the OpenSong documents and all that I have found are the original songs that came with the software as well as the example set under Sets folder.
I should also mention that I am unable to open any songs, create a set list, nor open any scriptures without receiving an error message "File could not be created: C:\Program Files\OpenSong\OpenSong Data\Sets\081714 (12)." 081714 is the date I was using for the set list for, which is how I normally title my sets.
Thank you again for responding and for any help you can give.

Because you installed on 'C:\Program Files\' I am wondering which OS you are on. Is that XP or earlier?
It is likely that you used an account with administrative permissions to install OpenSong. Is that the same account that you are using to operate OpenSong? In that case it might well be that you don't have write permissions for 'C:\Program Files\OpenSong\OpenSong Data'. That explains the 'File could not be created' message, not the fact you you lost all data.
My guess is that you used a different location than both 'C:\Program Files\OpenSong\OpenSong Data' and 'My Documents\OpenSong' with v1.3. Could that be?
Vwout,
I have Windows Vista as my OS. I did not intentional decide to install OpenSong under 'Program Files', but it did it as a default and I went along with it. I use the same account that I always use, which may be administrative, but I am not sure. Under 'My Documents' I only have a few things and OpenSong is not one of them and I am not sure where everything was stored with v1.3.
It sounds like you are telling me I may have lost all four or five years of work. Not good.
Do you still have the v1.3 operational?
I expect that your files are not lost, but are at a location that you don't remember ...
Vwout,
I FOUND MY SONGS AND SETS!!! I went through about 50 different folders, but I found them as subfolders under my Music folder! So now I have two questions: 1) how can I import the songs into the latest OpenSong version and 2) how can I open the latest OpenSong version since I currently cannot open any songs with this version. I'm thinking about uninstalling and reinstalling, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea. Any advice on this?
Thank you,
Cordellcc
That is nice! :)
You have two options:
I would suggest to use the second option, also because in case of a migration or opgrade of Windows it is more likely that you think about copying your My Music folder than OpenSong\OpenSong Data :)
Btw, to prevent future data loss, make a regular backup!
I tried the #2 option, but the problem is that I cannot even access the Documents Folder under the File Locations tab. The buttons are inactive. I see the Default and Custom options, but I cannot push either one. Only the right side is active, which has Location of PowerPoint Viewer and Location of Videolan Client.

I have found that using Dropbox is a good way to store the files for OpenSong. I use a mac and a pc and the files are accessible by both. It works really well.
You people arbitrarily deleted al my data. I cannot believe. I have searched and searched and it is simply not there. How could you do that to somebody. How could you hurt them that way. I never gave you permission to change anythign. You reached into MY personal comnputer and deleted my songs. They are not gone forever. What kind of person woudl do such a thing?
Hi
How do you know "we" have deleted your files?
Did you want any help, or just complain?
As in the case of the user whose thread you have captured, it is much more likely, you just don't find your files anymore, or you deleted them yourself by accident, or someone else, having access to that computer deleted them, or some other program deleted them, or ...
This is not to put the blame back on you, it is just our experience.
