I expect that if he gets back to the list with the output of "yum --version", it will show 2 versions of the yum metaparser... hence the original problem of of yum failing with " TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for +=: 'int' and 'str'". This would indicate a badly upgraded RHEL as you suggest.
