Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I've not really had a huge amount of time to try it out (getting married = in 15 days), but I really like what I've seen so far. I like the = background look (mostly because I know it's going towards the ability to = have custom skins) also I like the fact that there is a starting set of = menu choices, keep up the good work man. =20 Barranger PS I'll send you what I've got so far with the emulator plugin tonight. = Please note that it is VERY pre-alpha and has hard coded paths to both = the emulator and the roms. -----Original Message----- From: Xavier Lois [mailto:xav...@if...] Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 6:05 AM To: Ope...@li... See inline ... 1) How do I add a config portion to my application?. Right = now if I use the test module with the weather module, if I click "Config"= nothing happens. Well this part is not in the ModuleLibrary :( The test modul= e is not very reliable because it was too less ... tested ! Look for Load and Save methods in the TV Module. Just to get= you started the idea is to create a serializable class which owns some p= roperties and to serialize it in a file ! 2) Are there really no layout managers in C#? Comming from = the Java world, man could I use them right now. Layout manager ? You can use "Anchors" in the windows form d= esigner to make your controls move when your form is resized ! 3) If I can figure out the config portion, I'll have a plugi= n ready for this weekend. The problem is I have no web space and theref= ore no way to release it, what should I do? =20 Just send me your plug in inclusiv source code and I will po= st it on sourceforge and add you as developper for the openmc project= . Of course you could create your own sourceforge project for third part= y plugins for OpenMC (one guy made this for myHTPC) ___[ Pub ]__________________________________________________= __________ Inscrivez-vous gratuitement sur Tandaime et gagnez un voyage= =E0 Venise www.Tandaime.com/index.php?origine=3D4 Tandaime, et la vie v= ous sourit ! |

Sounds Great! I haven't got a remote(yet) but i will buy one at the end o= f next month along with a tv tuner so that i can set up my pc as a 'meda player'. I will definetly try the remote and tv tuner out with open mc an= d get back to you on how things went. In the meantime i'll be monitoring th= e progress of this awesome project. /Peter > Hi Peter, > >>Hi! Hi Peter, >Hi! Looks like a great app! Thank You ! >Has anyone tried open mc with a remote control, and if so h= ow easy to >use is it? I am using it in every test ! In the Extras directory there = is a girder (www.girder.nl) file which describes all the events OpenMC s= upports. You have to use Girder 3.2 or less because the new version is no= t a freeware anymore :(=20 You can of course try with other software than girder. I have got some problems at the moment with the remote contr= ol in OpenMC : - when an IE control is there, it might trap the focus ! - I didn't test the remote control navigation with treeviews= / combobox / listview but I will do it as soon as possible ! If you test it please send me a bug report and I will correc= t what does not work :) >Is it possible to configure different "default directories"= for >movies/pictures/music etc? Hi! Looks like a great app! I have been looking at windows media center for a while but have not yet taken the step on buying a certified computer. And i must say that i am glad i haven't. An open source alternative is much more appealing. I have just got two questions. 1). Has anyone tried open mc with a remote control, and if so how easy to use is it? 2.) Is it possible to configure different "default directories" for movies/pictures/music etc? Since i hope to use this app as a "media player" in my living room i am hoping to use a remote control as much as possible. And browsing around the filesystem too much using only a remote is quite clumsy. Oh i almost forgot, i love the idea of a games plugin/tab. Regards Peter |

Hi, >Cool, looks good, is that the order in which you'll be work= ing on=20 >things? =20 Yes, but if someone joins the team with new ideas, modules o= r just time to help then this list can change ! >Also, in terms of the User Interface, will you stick with t= he static=20 >menu on the left or will you allow for plugins to take full= control=20 >of the screen? Well, the TV Module allows you to put Windows Media Player i= n fullscreen mode.=20 I am plannign to radically change this ugly menu ! In fact i= t will hide itself after some seconds and will be brought back with some= remote control event or something. Its look will change too ... I h= ope I can make the items scroll in a neverending loop. The current ite= m would be highlighted and the others in the shadow ... but I still hav= e a lot to learn with Controls in dotnet ! =20 >Excellent, the simplified approach will win you many fans. You can also just look at the Picture viewer module ! He is = very simple ! The implementation of IOpenModule is quite always the same= from one module to the other ... just ProcessMessage changes ! Just c= opy/paste its code in your own module :) =20 >While I'm sure most people know how to unzip a file, people= who would=20 >potentially beta test the software could potentially be sca= red off by=20 >not having a start menu item to click :) Well, one point for you, I forgot the start menu link ! I wi= ll look into that. =20 >I have to admit, when I first started the app, I had though= t I did=20 >something wrong :) It took a second or two to figure it ou= t but=20 >after that It was fine. As for default menu items, the def= acto=20 >standard seems to be "Pictures" "Music" "Movies" "Weather" = "Close". =20 I will took these ones for the next version of OpenMC ... ne= xt week ! >Now I know that you've got many more modules than this, but= you may=20 >want to shy away from adding every single one, or maybe com= e up with=20 >sub menus so that you can have a media menu item that opens= up a=20 >media sub menu containing "Music", "Movies", "Tv", "Back". = Anyways,=20 >it's just a thought SubMenus are in the pipeline. I need them to make a Game cat= egory :) =20 >Excellent, this is definately a project that I'd like to co= ntribute=20 >to and use in my own htpc I am glad to read this :) >Today after work I'm going to look at getting the project u= p and=20 >running within Sharp Developer (=20 >http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/Default.aspx ) Jus= t cause=20 >it's an open source C# IDE, I'll let you know how that goes= . I hope it works in SharpDevelop too ! It would be really gre= at ! ___[ Pub ]__________________________________________________= __________ Inscrivez-vous gratuitement sur Tandaime et gagnez un voyage= =E0 Venise www.Tandaime.com/index.php?origine=3D4 Tandaime, et la vie v= ous sourit ! |

Hi, Thank you all for joinning the list ! =20 >After spending many months looking for a good open source w= indows >HTPC front end I have finally found openMC. Let me start o= ff by=20 >saying great job on this project! =20 Thank you :) >I have a few questions and a few suggestions to make (I hop= e this is=20 >the correct place for this). =20 You are welcome ! The best place for questions is the Forum,= the best place for bug reports is the bug tracker of sourceforge. But this mailing list is a more direct link between the Open= MC user community ;) then it is ok ! >First the questions. Is there somewhere I can find the pro= ject >roadmap to see what tasks are planned and in what order? =20 You can "normally" follow the project roadmap in the Task pa= rt of sourceforge where every task is defined. I made some cleanni= ng there today. Basically here is the roadmap : - New User Interface (prettier, user customizablewith themes= ) - News module (probably based on RSS and Yahoo) - New User Interface for the Weather Module - New User Interface for the InternetRadio Module (because o= f navigation problems inside the IE Control with the remote control.) - Better Multimedia Module - Better Picture Volume And maybe : - Better Video Conferencing Module - Voice module for Girder - DVD Player And of course Tests, tests and tests :) >Also, is here any documentation on how to write plugins and= install >them. =20 I wrote something like that in a mail for someone else ... I= will try to post it on this list but basically there is nothing more sim= ple than writting your own module and instal it (This was one of my r= equirements) : 1.Step : your module has to implement IOpenModule from the M= oduleLibrary 2.Step : If you want to use other modules in your own module= you have to implement IOpenMCMain (or something like that, just look at DefaultGUI.cs) from the ModuleLibrary. 3.Step : copy your dll in the Dlls directory 4.Step : if you have a config file copy it in the Config dir= ectory 5.Step : start openmc and link your module with a button. The End :) >Now for the suggestions, for the next release, it might mak= e sense to=20 >have two downloads. One for the source, and one being a in= staller of >the application. =20 Well the instal has just to copy everything in a directory != I suppose everyone knows how to unzip a file ? >My second suggestion is that perhaps you should set up a de= fault=20 >begining menu with the menu items most commonly used. You are right ! it must be strange to start OpenMC and to ge= t a blank screen :) I will do this in the next beta ... any suggestion= for the default modules ? >Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here. =20 No problems, suggestions, error reports and critics are alwa= ys welcome when they are justified and explained ! >Hopefully I'll be subitting patches and plugins soon, Would be very nice !!! Bye ! ____________________________________________________________= _________ Un mot doux =E0 envoyer? Une sortie cin=E9 =E0 organiser? Fa= ites le en temps r=E9el avec MSN Messenger! Hello all, After spending many months looking for a good open source windows HTPC = front end I have finally found openMC. Let me start off by saying great = job on this project! I have a few questions and a few suggestions to = make (I hope this is the correct place for this). First the questions. = Is there somewhere I can find the project roadmap to see what tasks are = planned and in what order? Also, is there any documentation on how to = write plugins and install them. Now for the suggestions, for the next = release, it might make sense to have two downloads. One for the source, = and one being a installer of the application. My second suggestion is = that perhaps you should set up a default begining menu with the menu = items most commonly used. Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here. Hopefully I'll be subitting patches and plugins soon, Barranger |
