There is an open source C compiler on sourceforge called SDCC (small device c compiler) which supports 8051 and PIC products. The programmer is fairly easy to make but perhaps not as nice as AVR in circuit programming.. I don't know how important this is when you consider this whole idea in context. A surface mount project is out of bounds for most home experimenters unless they have good tools and are quite skilled. So if this is looking more like a device that would be sold complete, it would be programmed at the source. This is not in keeping with the philosophy of openeeg I know but my primary goal for this idea was not necessarily to make something that everyone could build. Same with my active electrodes. I want them to be a certain way and fill the requirements for their operation. If this means that they get a little complicated it is acceptable ( only from my perspective). I think the current modeeg fits the requirement for accessibility to the general person quite nicely. If we want to get mini and portable we may have to give something up IMHO.
