No, that shouldn't be necessary. The return result from the mutablebuffer space method is the mutablebuffer itself, so that is equivalent to using the ~~ method. The failing test cases all have one thing in common, then very strange characters in the string. I suspect these are somehow getting mangled due to some sort of code page issues, although where/how is really a mystery to me.
