Who prepares Extlib releases? I have created ExtLib 1.5.1 release and upgraded the GODI package for both 3.09 and 3.10 to use the latest release. The release can be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/ocaml-extlib. Package maintainers are encouraged to upgrade their package (noting the new download & home page URLs). I will announce the release on OCaml announcements later, once the old SF home page has been updated to point to the new home page. Janne |

Hi ExtLib users and developers, Some of you may have noticed that there hasn't been an ExtLib release in quite a while. Although the last release is pretty stable, a few bug fixes have been submitted to CVS since the last release. I discussed the state of ExtLib development in a private thread with Nicolas to probe whether I should be expecting a release in the near future or not. As it happened, Nicolas told me that although he's still actively using ExtLib, he unfortunately doesn't have much time to work on maintaining the library. As I have been using ExtLib for quite some time now and find it highly valuable, I wanted to offer my helping hand to get new (mostly bug fix) releases of ExtLib out of the door. To make maintaining an easier job, we figured with Nicolas that moving the project over to http://code.google.com would be help. The good thing about code.google.com is that it provides an easy to use bug DB, a wiki (for both user and developer documentation) and Subversion. By moving the project to a new home, we hope to enable easier bug tracking & reporting and less hassle in setting up SVN access. The old CVS repository has been converted to SVN and moved in its entirety to http://code.google.com/p/ocaml-extlib. This version is the new ExtLib mainline. I will be releasing the extlib 1.5.1 version any day now. I can also take care of updating the GODI package. I hope I still have enough time to squeeze the release into the year 2007 :) Janne |

Hi Robert, > I've attached the C program I used to generate the test data. I guess a > whole range of test data could be generated to test the Unzip module. I created a bit more test coverage with your zlib-test.c and created a second Unzip test case. The generator program is in extlib-test/util/zlib-test. The coverage is nowhere near perfect but should be better than nothing. I've committed your bug fix into CVS after having tested Unzip module with the new, somewhat improved test. Now all we need is a new release :) Janne |

> > Would it be time to release Extlib 1.5.1? > > Agreed. Who prepares Extlib releases? I'd guess Nicolas. It's been pretty quiet on this list so it seems people are not very enthusiastic about releasing new versions. Extlib on GODI is still 1.4 which would also be good to upgrade. I think it would be good to adopt major.minor.patch versioning for 1.5.x releases, to clearly mark that the releases are bugfixes only. I can try and upgrade the extlib GODI package if no one else volunteers. But we first need extlib-1.5.1.tar.gz release package. :) Janne |

I should add that the bug is that the Unzip module attempts to calculate the 16bit one's complement of a value by 0x10000 - x, where it should be 0xffff - x. Uncompressed blocks in the DEFLATE format are stored as: size of data (2 bytes, little endian) one's complement of size of data (2 bytes, little endian) the data... The unzip module checks the agreement between the two sizes incorrectly and throws an exception on valid data. Bob |

It is interesting that in all of these files, the only uncompressed block that triggers the bug was in the file sun/util/resources/TimeZoneNames_fr.class in the jre/lib/rt.jar file of Sun's JVM version 1.6.0.01. I've made the test case a little more convincing now by taking the output of zlib and using that as the test data (there was a harmless mistake in the test data I gave previously: the order of the bits in the first byte was switched). The new test case is: let test_unzip_bug1 () = let test data = let input = IO.input_string data in let unzipped = Unzip.inflate input in try let str = IO.read_all unzipped in assert (str = "XY") with Unzip.Error Unzip.Invalid_data -> assert false in (* this is "XY" compressed by zlib at level 9 *) test "\x78\xda\x8b\x88\x04\x00\x01\x0b\x00\xb2"; (* this is "XY" compressed by zlib at level 0 *) test "\x78\x01\x01\x02\x00\xfd\xff\x58\x59\x01\x0b\x00\xb2" The unmodified Unzip is OK on the first one, but fails on the second. The modified Unzip succeeds on both. I've attached the C program I used to generate the test data. I guess a whole range of test data could be generated to test the Unzip module. Bob |

A few bug fixes have gone into Extlib since the release of 1.5 version in Feb 2006. Would it be time to release Extlib 1.5.1? By the same token, should we also move the code to SVN from CVS? I find CVS really hard and obscure to use having used SVN, Darcs and Perforce for ages.. Janne |
