Dear netnice users/hackers, I have a good news, and a request, for you today. So far, VIFs can flexibly control network traffic on a host, but, it cannot provide ALTQ-like queuing control, for example, queuing control by address-port pairs. So, I have implemented a new mechanism for VIF system, VIFlet. As the name suggests, VIFlet is a software component, based on the Java technology. A VIFlet is a container of methods to perform processing of packets. On the new system, Java Virtual Machines are embedded on each VIF, and users can run their own VIFlets to customize functionality of their VIFs. To write such a program, you can simply use ordinary Java development environment. Just inherit VIFlet class provided in the class library, and override necessary methods. Sample VIFlet is attached below, and you will notice that it is really easy to write a VIFlet. To boost the performance, I also implemented a in-kernel Just-In-Time compiler, which speeds up execution of VIFlets close to hardcoded implementations. A request is that I need a proofreader for a technical report of the new technology, my dissertation :-) Because it has more than 150 pages, I think it would be reasonable to pay for that, in return for the feedback and for the time. I need a native english speaker, and appreciate latex experience. If you're interested, please let me know. Even if you're not interested, comments and questions are highly appreciated :-) thanks! -- taka public class PriQVIFlet extends VIFlet { private static final int NCLASS = 4; private Queue[] queue; private PacketClassifier pc = new SimplePacketClassifier(); PriQVIFlet() { System.out.println("Initializing..."); queue = new Queue[NCLASS]; for (int i = 0; i < NCLASS; i++) queue[i] = new Queue(); } public void enqueue(Packet p) { int type = pc.classify(p); length++; queue[type % NCLASS].enqueue(p); } public Packet dequeue() { for (int i = 0; i < NCLASS; i++) if (queue[i].isEmpty() != true) { length--; return queue[i].dequeue(); } return null; } } |

Dear netnice users/hackers, As I have announced, I have been planning to host a hacking camp in Pittsburgh this summer. However, because of several difficulties, I have decided to postpone the camp until next March. Accordingly, the release of Netnice-2.2 will be delayed as much... Although we cannot have direct contact, however, interested developers may independently work on the tasks undone. Such tasks are summarized in our project website, and I would really appreciate if you share the burden to make the system better. Even if you are not a kernel hacker, there are a lot of tasks :-) Specifically, I would appreciate if some of you take a look at nndiag script. It does not generate stable output between runs. Any other offers are welcome. Just write to the related liets, since personal messages may cause task conflict. http://www.netnice.org/pukiwiki.php?Netnice2.2 thanks!!! -- taka Takashi Okumura wrote: > > Dear netnice users/hackers, > > In early may, I'm planning to host a hacking camp in Pittsburgh, to > intensively collaborate with netnice users/developers toward the > release of netnice-2.2. > > You will need to pay just for your roundtrip flights, and I will > arrange a bed and working environment for you. Taka I am very interested. But I have been doing some independent study work at school and I need to begin wrapping that up. I would like to devote more to netnice, which I know I haven't done much recently, but Iv had some local side project stuff that I have been committing some time to. While I see this as a fantastic opportunity, I cannot make any commitments right now. I do appreciate the offer, and I am sure you have intrigued many of the other devs. I still would like to perform more kernel contributions, which I have yet to truly do for this project. Thanks -Matt Takashi Okumura wrote: > Dear netnice users/hackers, > > In early may, I'm planning to host a hacking camp in Pittsburgh, to > intensively collaborate with netnice users/developers toward the > release of netnice-2.2. > > You will need to pay just for your roundtrip flights, and I will > arrange a bed and working environment for you. Dear netnice users/hackers, In early may, I'm planning to host a hacking camp in Pittsburgh, to intensively collaborate with netnice users/developers toward the release of netnice-2.2. You will need to pay just for your roundtrip flights, and I will arrange a bed and working environment for you. I am planning to work on Knoppix remastering for Knoppix/Netnice integration and libnetnice implementation. But, you may pick up any subproject of your choice. Several suggestions are listed in our website, such as mod_netnice (traffic management/access control module for Apache). I will arrange things to help you finish the task you choose. I believe that this will be a good opportunity for students who want to be (kernel) hackers. Even if you do not have time to join the camp, you may join a dinner (on May 6, maybe?). If interested, please let me know, so that we can coordinate. Questions and/or suggestions are also highly appreciated to make the plan better. thanks! -- ta...@ne... >> btw, i'm planning to come back to pittsburgh for a while to work on my >> dissertation in this early summer. and, during the stay, i may host a >> netnice workshop (R&D camp) to finish several tasks, such as libnetnice, >> Knoppix/Netnice, mod_netnice for Apache. >> >> although i cannot pay you, i'll sponsor good accommodation and working >> environment (bed, desk, WiFi connection, printer, etc). i guess that >> will be a good opportunity for students who want to be kernel hackers. >> the term will be just after Spring finals of most U.S. students (early >> may?) >> >> i'll suggest you about more concrete plan later, when i fix my travel >> schedule. but, if you're interested at this point, please let me know, >> so that i can have better plan. or, if any of you have a good place >> (house, maybe?) and can host the workshop inside the U.S., please let >> me know. >> >> >> thanks! |

Dear netnice users/developers, I'm sorry that I've not contacted you guys for so long. I've been negotiating with a developer in charge of the development of libnetnice. But, it finally turned out that he cannot contribute the implementation to the project. So, now, I am looking for other developers who can take over the implementation task, utilizing a specification he designed. Contribution to the specification is also highly appreciated. I have already posted a job description at sourceforge, but, if you find the task interesting, please let me know. * help wanted page https://sourceforge.net/people/viewjob.php?group_id=87780&job_id=23605 * libnetnice ML http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/netnice-library thanks, -- taka p.s. Dear Netnice Users/Hackers/Developers, Breaking the six months' silence, we release beta versions of Netnice-2.2 for FreeBSD 4.11 and for FreeBSD 5.4. Most significant change is the support for "easy installation". The package are loaded with pre-compiled GENERIC kernel, some binaries and libraries. Now, users can just type "make easyinstall", to make their systems "netnice-ready"! http://www.netnice.org/download Packages for NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux will come up later. But, we will make every effort to release them, and the final Netnice-2.2R with sufficient quality. To that end, we would highly appreciate any feedback, and any help. Please contact me! Thanks! -- taka |

Hi Chris, I suggest you to use gdb to check each step of the control, in the second trial. It might be caused by bugs in netniced, or, by the kernel module. I would appreciate if you rule out the former case, by the stepwise execution. Then, if you're sure that it is caused by the kernel, please let me know how to reproduce the bug, without netniced. Actually, I'm working on the beta version of the package right now, and it is highly likely that I can include the bug fix in the latest version. Thanks, -- taka P.S. You may directly send the materials to me. Or, you may switch to another mailing list, netnice-developers. Thanks. I'm trying to test out the rate limiting facilities of netnice but I am having a few problems. We are using netniced with the snort module to detect a "bad" process and then limit it. For the first experiment we are limiting the rate of the process to zero. This way, we know if it is working if there is no network activity. The process is successfully rate limited one time. If we restart the process or the experiment the next time we limit the process nothing happens (by this I mean there is no limitation of the traffic). We have to reboot the machine in order for the limiting to work again. If anyone has an idea on what we might be doing wrong, or where the problem might lie, let me know. I can provide the netnice.cf file to anyone who wants to see it. Thanks, Chris |

Dear Netnice users, As you might have noticed, we have released Netnice-2.2Alpha. The package includes kernel patches for FreeBSD4.11, FreeBSD5.3 NetBSD1.6.2, OpenBSD3.6, and Linux 2.6.7. I believe they also work on IPv6. The future release schedule of the package is shown below. Your participation in the testing process is highly, truly, really, appreciated. Dear netnice developers/users, sorry for taking too long. we had so many things to do, and could not make great progress for several months. but now, we have fixed our release schedule and have started to work intensively to meet the dates, as follows. Feb 8, 2005 alpha release Mar 1, 2005 beta release Mar 22, 2005 Release Candidate 1 Apr 1, 2005 Netnice 2.2 Release the alpha release (feb 8) includes the latest kernel patch for FreeBSD4.11, FreeBSD5.3, OpenBSD3.6, NetBSD1.6.2, and hopefully, for Linux, also. We will probably be able to add MacOS X(Darwin 7.7) and NetBSD2.0, by april 1. i'm writing this email to you, to ask you for some help. first of all, can some of you try the latest patch for FreeBSD4.11, on your environment, and give me feedback so that i can improve before the alpha release? (yes, i know you want 5.3, not 4.11. but, time is limited... i promise to release 5.3 in the feb 8 package...) secondly, isn't there anybody who have used FreeSBIE, or CDBSD before? to create a bootable freebsd image? i have released one bootable CD in june. but, since then we have made so many improvements, and added many new software onto our repository. so, in addition to the alpha release of the kernel patches, i would like to provide the system in a more easy-to-use form. so, i would really appreciate if any of you volunteer to create the iso image. i'm really in trouble about the scheduling (too many tasks to do, too little time.) if you participate in the development process, i will mail netnice stickers for laptops and for servers to you (it's verrrry cool), just as a token of my thanks. thanks!! -- taka Takashi Okumura wrote: > > after several months' struggle, we are finishing initial porting task of > FreeBSD4/Netnice, onto FreeBSD5, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. i think we can > release the alpha-patches for them in a month. Dear netnice-users, i have just put a snapshot which includes an experimental pre-alpha quality patch for FreeBSD5.3Beta(5,6,7). objective of the pre-alpha is to test SMP environment, since i don't have one currently at hand. just a line of "working!" report is really helpful, at this stage. your help is highly appreciated. patches for NetBSD and OpenBSD will follow shortly. Linux and Mac OS X will be supported within the year. as you might have realized, we will have more applications, netnice firewall, mod_netnice for apache, libnetnice, etc. hope you enjoy. thanks! -- taka |
