Hello All! We are now looking for alpha testers for the Firewall Builder module. The module was built on Fedora Core 2, but the output files created by the module are in a netnice-friendly format. So they can be transferred and applied to any unit with netnice installed. If you have a few minutes and are interested in testing, please send me an email. Thanks, Patrick Myers |

dear netnice developers, after several months' struggle, we are finishing initial porting task of FreeBSD4/Netnice, onto FreeBSD5, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. i think we can release the alpha-patches for them in a month. Linux port and Mac OS X port will follow soon in several months. and, i'm writing this message to you, to make a decision about the alpha release. as you know, netnice requires applications to realize fancy controlling of network I/O on end-host. and, we are planning to add two applications shortly to our application line-up: fwbuilder and libnetnice. firewall builder is a nice-looking firewall rule builder with full GUI support, and we can use the application to create firewall rule to set onto VIF. the functionality is still primitive, but, it will be faster than existing implementations, and we will extend its functionality soon. libnetnice is a library to control network I/O, and we believe that it is the first library that controls network I/O on end-host operating systems in a platform independent manner and realizes control of network I/O for any user application. (i know that there is a portable bandwidth limit library, but i believe you know what i mean here.) so, we have several new products, which would definitely make the project much more attractive. however, the problem is that, since each of the products is developed by different individuals, it is a bit difficult to keep pace of all of the subprojects; some of them will be ready in a week, some others may take a month more. what i would like to know is, whether you want us to wait until all of the products become ready, or you want to have a patch for your own platform (FreeBSD5.3.1, maybe) ASAP? i'm personally thinking that, the complete package would be a bit better, since we can save the number of advertisement posts to related mailing lists. otherwise, we need to post messages whenever some of the pieces become ready, which might be annoying to subscribers not interested in the project. (right?) so, do you prefer to have a complete package which includes everything? or, do you want to have a patch for your current platform (FreeBSD5.3.1, maybe) ASAP? i would appreciate any feedback, comments, and opinions. please vote, if you can. http://www.netnice.org/pukiwiki-e.php?packaging%20strategy thanks! -- taka p.s. i have just created a new ML, netnice-library, for the discussion of libnetnice. please join us, to discuss its specification. thanks! |

Dear netniceans, i have just renewed our project home page. in this update, i have entirely rewritten the contents using the wiki technology, and now, you can create and maintain your own page. so, if you want to set up a sub-project related to netnice, please feel free to add anything. i'll put a link from the main pages. also, i'm looking for proofreaders. if you have any suggestions, please let me know. i would really appreciate your contributions. http://www.netnice.org/ thanks! -- taka |

hi, Michael L. Gualtieri wrote: > > haha sorry about that type-o > > I meant: > > % cd $NETNICE/netnice-common/src > % make all okay. so, what you suggested here is the same as what thierry did. (il n'y a pas de makefile dans le directory.) i think, in the package, we can "make" in netnice/src, and this automatically calls netnice-common/src. sorry for the troubles. -- taka |

I think there is an error in the README. After you build the kernel and it says: % cd $NETNICE/freebsd/src % make all You really need to do: % cd $NETNICE/freebsd/src % make all Hope this helps... ah... you're right, assuming that you're talking about our CVS/netnice. actually, the makefile is in the .tgz package, because it is in my local copy of the CVS module. i simply missed to add&commit it for several months. i know that the kernel patch for FB4.9 in the package has a minor mistake, which is easy to fix. so, i'll try to take another snapshot... merci! -- taka thierry wrote: > > Hi, > > Not able to do NetNice working on my FreeBSd 4.9 box. > It is not able to build binaries, because in freebsd/src ... there is no > Makefile ... > > Thx > > -- > Thierry > "Des chercheurs qui cherchent, on en trouve, mais des chercheurs qui trouvent, on en cherche" > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.Net email sponsored by Black Hat Briefings & Training. > Attend Black Hat Briefings & Training, Las Vegas July 24-29 - > digital self defense, top technical experts, no vendor pitches, > unmatched networking opportunities. Hi, Not able to do NetNice working on my FreeBSd 4.9 box. It is not able to build binaries, because in freebsd/src ... there is no Makefile ... Thx -- Thierry "Des chercheurs qui cherchent, on en trouve, mais des chercheurs qui trouvent, on en cherche" |

dear netnice developers, i've committed the latest netnice patch, which supports two new features, "filter" and "port", that realize integration of network QoS and network security. * Filter * filter is packet filter (software firewall) that works inside the kernel, and can filter out packets much faster than other firewall implementation, thanks to its JIT-assember. for testing, use vf command. netnice-2.1/contrib/pcap/vf /proc/network/vif_of_your_choice/filter rule this will compile the rule into filter code, and write it into VIF filter, specified in the 1st argument. write filter rule in BPF filter format. for example, if you want to allow access from a machine, pooh; vf /proc/network/fxp0/filter "src pooh or dst pooh" * Port * port is a BPF compatible packet capture interface. using port, you can tap network I/O of process, socket, etc, with libpcap applications, such as tcpdump and ethereal. for this purpose, you'll need to steal device access of BPS, as follows. % cd /dev/ % rm bpf0 % ln -s /proc/network/vif_of_your_choice/port ./bpf0 * divert VIF * using the mechanisms above, we can use VIF as a diverting interface, which diverts packets from kernel to userspace, and returns them back to the original flow. for testing, use; % netnice-2.1/contrib/pcap/divert /proc/network/vif_of_your_choice to monitor the diverting status, the following option might be useful. % sysctl -w net.netnice.monitor_divert=1 the code is in CVS. i'll take a snapshot and upload it to sourceforge, shortly. enjoy! -- taka |

dear netnice users, i've put a new snapshot to our web. it includes the latest kernel patch with Netnice Packet Filter code, for the latest FreeBSD 4.9 that has just been released. you can now tap Virtual Network Interface with standard libpcap applications, such as tcpdump and ethereal. since it's so cool and stable, i've installed this to my main desktop :-) please try, and give me feedbak. thanks! -- taka |

dear netnice folks, i've just released the new SNAP, SNAP-11-11-2003. this includes the latest kernel patch for FreeBSD4.7/4.8. i've made so many modifications for code stability, and it also improved code efficiency. i fixed a serious bug in the installation script that may stop the system at startup, and everything looks fine at the moment. so, i would be happy if you give me some feedback. http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/netnice if this is stable, i'll go into the Netnice Packet Filter code, which realizes integration of VIF-based traffic control and VIF-based network security, particularly IDS. also, we'll resume porting of the reference implementation on FreeBSD to OpenBSD, and hopefully to NetBSD shortly after OpenBSD. i apologize for the slow work, and appreciate your suggestions, patches, and feedback of any sort. thanks! -- taka |

as you might know, i've started using the sourceforge CVS server for the source repository. however, it seems like that the anonymous CVS access is not working as expected, due to some performance problem of sf.net. actually, they are managing two CVS servers, one for developers and the other for the anonymous access. and, they are using the developer server as primary (allowing "commit" operation for developers), and mirroring the data onto the secondary anonymous server (for read-only service). however, i feel that the sync between two storage are taking more than 3 days, maybe a week, although they keep saying the sync is done on daily-basis... anyway, please note that the anonymous CVS server is not a good source for the latest code. as far as i know, SSH-based CVS is working fine. http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=17790&group_id=1#cvs -- taka |
