NeReO — News Reader Open-source
NeReO is a text-only Usenet newsreader for Android, released under the GNU
General Public License v3. The name is an acronym: NE(ws) RE(ader)
O(pen-source).
WHY IT EXISTS
For years the most usable Usenet client on Android was Piao Hong Usenet
Client, and later its community-patched build known as the M17 MOD. That
branch is no longer maintained, and users of text newsgroups were left with
no actively developed, ad-free option. NeReO was written to fill that gap:
it keeps the compact, thread-first layout that made Piao Hong pleasant to
read, and adds the depth of configuration that desktop readers such as
MesNews, slrn and Gnus have always offered.
TEXT ONLY, ON PURPOSE
NeReO supports discussion groups only. There is no binary
download, no attachment handling, no NZB support and no multi-part decoding.
Everything in the app is built: reading and writing plain-text articles as fast
and as comfortably as possible on a phone screen.
