I thought that if a vbr file had an xing tag, then the encoder would put average bitrate in the first frame header. Obviously not. Average bitrate is easy enough to figure when you have an xing tag, since you know the length and number of samples in the output, and can calculate average bitrate exactly from the song length. I just didn't realize I had to.
