I do not have recent/current figures. A couple years ago when I was active on the ffmpeg mailing list a "competition" was done - each side claiming its encoder was better of course ;). IF you turn off B frames (now the default in mpeg2enc) the speed difference between the two was not large (other factors would almost certainly dominate the encoding pipeline). At that time ffmpeg had rate control issues that were causing coasters to be burned in fairly large quantities (rate too high). Almost certainly fixed now but I haven't had the inclination to revist the situation. Qualitywise I always had the feeling ffmpeg valued speed more. The video had a somewhat grainy/gritty look to it but that was probably just my eyes and the lighting conditions. Both encoders suffer the splotches or blockyness in the dark/black areas. I know that topic has come up numerous times on the mjepgtools mailing lists. The only workaround that I have found that helped was to heavily preprocess the data in Final Cut first. HOWEVER, the situation has, from initial tests, CHANGED greatly. The new encoder does a MUCH BETTER job of encoding the dark areas - NO blockiness in the first couple enocdings that have been done.
