Seems some systems or development environs do not have __progname. argv[0] is fine for logging usage statements so use argv[0]

Some versions of gcc added 'core2' in addition to 'nocona'. Apple's gcc 4.x

amazing how each release of g++ manages to break code that's compiled for years.
seems g++ 4.4 had an issue with strrchr() at line 56

Overrun somewhere - from a contributor on the mailing list is the overkill fix
of allocating lots more than is probably needed
