Change the mean1() declaration to be 'int8_t' instead of 'char'.

Some systems lack fmin() so provide a compatibility function.

Make the usage() message agree with both the code and the manpage. Change
the -s and -g option processing to give a warning message that the code was
removed and that the options are being accepted (ignored) for script
compatiblity. Remove unused code and data items.
