When trying to open a file on the mac version of minsky 1.52 from the recently saved files menu, a dialogue appears reading "Error: failed to open". Opening the same file via the Open file menua seems to work however.

It works for me (on the Mac). Sure you weren't trying to open a file that had been moved or deleted?
