And, if you space it out, as in your above example, or include relative
paths such as your a/b/c, or if you expect the semicolon to become part
of the assignment, then you WILL break path searching.  Also, the first
"$" in your example is DEAD WRONG.

  PATH=$PATH:/a/b/c

is good; your example is bad.
