Hi Dave, Thanks very much for taking the trouble to reply to my query. What project are you trying to build? Internet searches suggest that this error can appear if the version of autotools is too old than what is required by a project. Does your project require a newer version than the one supplied by the msysDTK? Or are you just tying 'aclocal' by itself with no code? Also, what version of aclocal are you running? The version of aclocal I am using is the version I received when I downloaded the Msys DTK and put it in a c:/msys/1.0 directory. This is according to instructions posted on the Mingw.org website. The aclocal version is v. 1.7.1. I found the same/similar references to out of date versions on the internet. I am not using it with any options. Help for aclocal doesn't clearly indicate (at least to me) what switches might be set to fix the problem. Maybe I don't understand the msys/mingw dev environments well enough, but what do you mean by this? Did you have some setup before where your autotools worked? When I downloaded Mingw I also hit the option to download Msys and the toolkit too. When I run the GNU build chain off this (with c:\mingw\bin as the location for aclocal, etc) everything builds just the way it should in the sense that aclocal (without a code), autoconf, automake, etc. produce the desired results. The problem only arises when I run aclocal off the DTK stored in the c:/msys/1.0/bin. I hope I've been clear in my description, and thanks again for trying to help. I notice that when running the MinGW installer you can choose to install the "MinGW Developer Toolkit" component, and this also gets you a copy of autotools. If you try doing that in a fresh installation (e.g. maybe C:\MinGW2) and run aclocal does that change anything? Does that get you a different version of aclocal?
