I have trawled through the updates. I have installed the 20080826
version, which leaves me with the  cd problem.

It did not work as described above.
Now more wierdness - when I use:

reddinm@TBADKI184 ~
$ cd /autoconf-2.63

it works

reddinm@TBADKI184 /autoconf-2.63

Not only that, it appears to keep working, and there is now no sign of
the problem.

On the SF project FRS page 
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435 you will 
find it named "MSYS Supplementary Tools".  In it you'll find a 
"Technology Preview: Tools for MSYS-1.0.11" release with more current 
versions of the tools contained within it.

On the SF project FRS page as above you will find "MSYS Base System" 
with a release of "Technology Preview: MSYS-1.0.11".  In it are more 
recent versions of the individual packages used to create MSYS.  The 
CORE MSYS package is delivered as msysCORE and contains the Minimal 
SYStem.  The next version is 1.0.11 and the most current released date 
of the preview is 20080826.  The bad thing about giving a specific file 
in the WIKI is that the WIKI data becomes outdated.

Strange.  What does ``ls -la'' show?

Does ``cd /autoconf-2.63'' behave better?

What is the output of ``set''?
