Thanks for all your suggestions guys.

I found gcc-core, gcc-g++, make, etc options under Devel while installing/upgrading Cygwin (you have to go and select them explicitly). Seems it can install MinGW's make,etc on it own if you want it to. And they work just fine! Thats how I finally compiled my program.

Sorry about the late reply. Figured I should mention how it worked out in the end!
