The make distributed with MSYS-1.0.10 is version 3.79. MinGW itself ships with mingw32-make already so named, and IIRC that one is 3.80. If you renamed the MSYS make to mingw32-make, then I'd expect `make --version' to say `command not found', unless you have one from some other source in your PATH. The mingw32-make we ship with MinGW is intended for user's who don't want to install MSYS; it doesn't play very well with MSYS. Since you are using MSYS, you should stick with the version of make we ship with that, and `make --version' should indicate 3.79. If you really need something newer than 3.79, then get the 3.81 version currently available as an MSYS snapshot: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/make-3.81-MSYS-1.0.11-snapshot.tar.bz2?download this will be the version shipped with MSYS-1.0.11, when it is eventually ready for release.
