I'm certainly not an expert on threading, Boost or otherwise.  However, while browsing some of the Boost threads header files, I thought I noticed conditionalization so that it would do different things depending upon whether it found ptheads or not.

The question, of course, is whether this conditionalization is smart enough to handle your postgresql case.
