According to the GCC manual, you should be ok with "-mtune=athlon64". Just don't use "-march=athlon64" as well: "While picking a specific cpu-type will schedule things appropriately for that particular chip, the compiler will not generate any code that does not run on the i386 without the -march=cpu-type option being used." The -mtune option merely controls instruction scheduling, i.e., "-mtune=athlon64" alone won't give you 64-bit code. FWIW, this question is probably better asked on a GCC mailing list.
