Kees Zeelenberg writes: > True, although all packages are from the Free Software Directory > maintained by the FSF, Maybe, but that's just a directory. Zlib and tiff, for instance, have nothing to do with the FSF. BTW, don't think I'm critical to the gnuwin32 project, on the contrary, I use your stuff all the time and heartily recommend it. Just the choice of name is a bit odd. > BTW, in the same way as this is true for GnuWin32, Mingw > (Minimalist GNU for Windows) has nothing to do with GNU, Huh? GCC and GNU libtools are the main ingredients in mingw. With hindsight, mingw's name is a bit odd too, though. The phrase "Minimalistic GNU for Windows" doesn't really correspond to what mingw is. Someone should invent a better expansion for "mingw"... (Remember that in the beginning, "GNU" was the name of FSF's operating system, and all the GNU utilities were originaly written mainly to run on GNU, although they of course ran also on most if not all Unixes then and since, and lots of them nowadays also on Windows. Well, FSF's operating system development proceeded very slowly, and then Linux appeared and took the world by storm. BSD is also still very much alive in several versions, but the GNU OS (Hurd) is still very marginal.) > Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is, it seems, not affiliated > to GNU or the FSF ;) GIMP originally stood for General Image Manipulation Program (see http://www.gimp.org/about/ancient_history.html) Later the G was changed to stand for GNU. I am quite certain this wasn't done without the FSF's approval. --tml |
