Thanks for your answer.

I created a small hello.c application, set the full path to the compiler in
the environment variables (without any other) and ran
gcc hello.c

The program compiles and runs fine.

But if I try a hello.cpp the compiler jells it cannot find iostream. So I added
CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH as above to the environment variables and get lots of errors
again, for example
