I compiled the code with g++ test.cpp, it rans fine. my g++ version is
3.3.1, winXP

Update:

The same exe, built on XP, runs fine on W2000 but crashes immediately on XP.
Both machines have the latest service pack and critical updates installed.
I'm going to do some more digging including trying another XP machine.
