Category: msys Group: None >Status: Deleted >Resolution: Invalid Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Gonzalo Garramuno (gga73) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: File issues after period of use (file descriptor issue?) Initial Comment: I've switched from cygwin to msys for most of my work and for the most part it is a superior solution. I use msys on a home network over samba to access files in my home directory on my linux box (which gets mapped to Z:) from a Windows XP box. One very nasty bug I found with this setup is an occasional problem that makes all utilities stop working and even effects other windows programs. MSYS will report problems such as being unable to fork (most common error output) when executing shell scripts with multiple commands or similar weird issues. This happens after extensive use, such as when running a complex Makefile several times across the network. When this happens, all windows applications on the machine start having issues starting up/opening files/functioning and, in the worst case, my firewall software (ZoneAlarm Free) will often also crash. It seems as if something in MSYS is not closing file descriptors properly, perhaps. The problem does NOT seem to happen with cygwin (nor cmd.exe or any other utility) and it is certainly not due to a virus. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Gonzalo Garramuno (gga73) Date: 2007-06-08 07:39 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=961712 Originator: YES Problem was verified to be with ZoneAlarm and not with MSYS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Gonzalo Garramuno (gga73) Date: 2007-06-08 07:39 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=961712 Originator: YES You have not given a proper bug report complete with a test case. The information given isn't enough to determine a problem or know how to duplicate it. Please refer to http://www.mingw.org/bugs.shtml before submitting a bug report. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: gnombat (gnombat) Date: 2007-06-07 01:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1294975 Originator: NO I had the same problem with MSYS until I disabled the ZoneAlarm firewall. It seems the firewall causes Windows to leak a few kilobytes memory for every process executed. This is generally only noticeable when you create hundreds of processes (as with a complex Makefile build). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=102435&aid=1732552&group_id=2435 |
