Category: website Group: MinGW Web Site Status: Closed Resolution: Wont Fix Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: amo_p (amo_p) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: MinGW-5.0.3 update silently fails reporting out-of-date Initial Comment: The new MinGW-5.0.3 version (which is kind of secret, or at least not listed on the main download page), when run, reports that there is a newer version, but does not say what or where it is. When it asked me if I wanted the newer version, I clicked Yes, and then the program appears to have silently failed -- it vanished and no other messages or displays appeared. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: elsapo (elsapo) Date: 2007-04-26 15:23 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1195173 Originator: NO Now I get it; I really hadn't realized the main web site was bad. That is too bad, but, c'est la vie, as they say -- it's all volunteer. My suggestion would be to just delete all that bad content, by the way, because there is a decent argument that bad info is worse than no info, in some situations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Keith Marshall (keithmarshall) Date: 2007-04-26 14:30 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=823908 Originator: NO This bug is against an outdated version of the installer. The original responder, (Earnie), referred you to the current version, and, quite reasonably, closed the bug. Development of this outdated version has been discontinued, and we do not plan to fix bugs in a defunct version, reported at this late stage in its life, (or death) cycle. The recommended solution is for you to use the currently maintained version. The main download page is here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435 and this is readily accessible from the project's main page here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw If you visit that download page, the current MinGW-5.1.3 version, (note the "1"; this isn't the 5.0.3 version the bug is reported against), of the installer is clearly visible, in the `Current' package collection. If you visit the download page at: http://www.mingw.org/download.shtml you will see an obsolete file list. I agree that this is a bad situation; we lack an active maintainer for the web site, but Earnie, with the assistance of another developer from our team, hopes to be able to address some of these issues, over the next few months. In the meantime, that page does say: `For the most up to date view of the data you need to [go to] the SF File Release pages', with an embedded hyperlink to that same main download page noted above; you ignore that advice at your own cost. Regards, Keith. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: elsapo (elsapo) Date: 2007-04-26 12:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1195173 Originator: NO But, what about everyone else? I mean, wouldn't it be better to remove the broken version, or replace its link with a link to the working one, than have everyone use the broken one, and then take their odds if they can figure out or find a link to the new unpublished one? I mean, my point was that I assumed it would be better to try to fix it for everyone, not just a private relatively secret fix for me (by relatively secret I mean in a text attachment to a closed bug -- I don't think anyone will look in closed bugs to find fixes to current programs -- anyway, I wouldn't, and I'm a good approximation to a newbie on MinGW :)) I guess there are two problems -- the current page points to apparently old and broken versions -- do you need someone to edit that web page, so at least it warns that the recommended downloads aren't correct? Second problem: the old versions that I've run, die silently. Do you need programming help to make the program put up some sort of message when it fails? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Earnie Boyd (earnie) Date: 2007-04-26 12:05 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=15438 Originator: NO I could have told your to go search with google or review the archives. I did point you to the current download. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: amo_p (amo_p) Date: 2007-04-25 23:06 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1778499 Originator: YES >From the reader's perspective here, such as mine, it looks like this bug is being rejected without being fixed, which tends to suggest that posting bugs is perhaps somewhat futile -- which is fairly credible given the number of outstanding bugs -- I was wondering if this was a dead or useless tracker, but I figured it would be worth a brief investment to try to throw something helpful onto it. Or is there more going on that the reader here simply cannot see? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Earnie Boyd (earnie) Date: 2007-04-25 20:32 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=15438 Originator: NO Use MinGW-5.1.3 from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435&package_id=82721&release_id=158801 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=102435&aid=1707590&group_id=2435 |
