I have had these kind of problems in the past, I do agree that gdb is a very robust debugger however it does seem to have its problems in Win32, I use the latest stable one (I think), 4.17.1, and there are times when it crashes before getting to the place the bug I am tracing is, I dont know if 5.x is stable yet (for win32) , where is it? why isnt gdb listed in the sourceforge mingw page? anyway, I use gdb inside xemacs, so might even be an xemacs-nt bug, but xemacs doesnt crash, gdb does.
