In most case the best is to use \usepackage[dvixxx,papersize={width, height}]{geometry} (where dvixxx is your current favourite DVI driver) This will work with dvixxx (e.g. dvips) and pdflatex. In case you are using one of the KOMA-classes use the option pagesize described in the manual. When using pdflatex you can also change the papersize by setting \pdfpagewidth and \pdfpageheight.
