As stated below, MikTeX is working well, provided I generate a file as "new.' But when I copied a file Diffsn.tex from my PC to the laptop running Vista, I am back to the same old problem when attempting to compile "I can't write to the file Diffsn.log." As you noted below it may be an Administrator problem. The administrator is "maggie" my daughter who was the first one to open the new laptop while unable to work for six months-I am now the administrator called "maggie." While in WinEdt, at the top of the window is the path for the working file. When the path is C:\Users\maggie\AppData\Roaming\WinEdt\Samples\Paper\Pi.tex compiling yields a DVI file. But when the path is C:\Program Files\WinEdt Team\WinEdt\Samples\Paper\Diffsn.tex compiling yields the error message "I can't find the file Diffsn.tex". Neither can I when starting from the desktop (WinEdt closed) and following the latter path I can't find Diffsn.tex. On running the WinEdt Diagnostic, I see File: "C:\Users\maggie\AppData\Roaming\WinEdt\Diffsn.log There is a bunch of stuff but the relevant information seems to be: *** OS: Windows 6.0 (Build 6000) *** Account States: Restricted User *** Configuration: MikTeX *** Tex System: MikTeX *** User Profile: Enabled *** %B: C:\Program Files\WinEdt Team\WinEdt *** %b: C:\Users\maggie\AppData\Roaming\WinEdt I have checked WinEdt FAQ but that doesn't seem to help much. I realize that this is not really a MikTeX problem but a WinEdt setup problem, but Alan seems to have recognized what the problem might be and might be able to suggest how I should handle the transfer of files from the old PC Les Helms Lester Helms wrote: > WinEdt and Miktex are now doing what they are supposed to be doing.
