in case it may be helpful to others, i found following solution.  type

initexmf -u

in command prompt.

ok, i found the file _Run.log and i see nothing unusual in it, except
that it terminates in:

No pages of output.
Transcript written on latex.log.
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

so it appears that i am stymied too...
