Apparently, Hans misunderstood the problem ;-( I am getting exactly the same problem after installing small MiKTeX from the October 2004 CD. However, when I run initexmf -u from a command window, it works just fine. Something is broken somewhere... Having said that, I have another problem. dvips fails with "8r.enc file not found" message, although the file is located in two places: C:\TeX\MiKTeX\fonts\enc\dvips\fontname\8r.enc C:\TeX\MiKTeX\fonts\enc\dvips\psnfss\8r.enc FYI, C:\TeX is my MiKTeX root.
