Try this: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{txfonts} \usepackage{bm} \begin{document} {\boldmath$\alphaup$} $\bm{\alphaup}$ \end{document} The bm package is only nessary for the second solution, which is probably the most convenient if you have mixed expressions.
