The fact that this is required is clearly a bug, and it will be good
to find a true solution.

The error message you were getting ("Attempt to set
"Core Camera" to "Spot". Core property is ready only or the request value is
not allowed.") is clearly not reflecting the actual problem, and might
be masking the actual error. Nico has recently fixed a small issue in
the Core that might be related to this, so it might help to see what
error message and logging you get with the latest nightly build.

You can install Micro-Manager anywhere you want, and it will load
configuration files from where you tell it to (it does remember the
last used config file, even if that was from a different copy of MM).
But the location of the Micro-Manager installation shouldn't have an
effect on this issue with the Spot camera.
