Thanks.  I removed swig (previously installed with synaptic package 
manager) and reinstalled it, building the latest version from source.  
After doing everything from the beginning (./mmUnixBuild.sh, ./configure 
--with-imagej=/usr/local/ImageJ, make) make install fails with the same 
(above) error message
