Hi, The "relax" needs to have a starting value for max opacity which it will then incrementally change to the new max value. Take a look at the inlists in test_suite/limit_max_opacity. Here are the relevant lines from inlist_2 in that directory. in &star_job relax_opacity_max = .true. new_opacity_max = 0.3 opacity_max_multiplier = 0.99 and in &controls opacity_max = 2 ! use this as starting value for relaxing to smaller max opacity -Bill On Oct 26, 2011, at 7:15 AM, jin...@ca... wrote: > Hello, > > I tried to use relax_opacity adding these lines in the star_job in inlist: > > relax_opacity_max = .true. > new_opacity_max = 0.1 > opacity_max_multiplier = 0.99 > > But it reports err because the current opacity_max=-1. Hello, I tried to use relax_opacity adding these lines in the star_job in inlist: relax_opacity_max = .true. new_opacity_max = 0.1 opacity_max_multiplier = 0.99 But it reports err because the current opacity_max=-1. What does that mean? No constraint on opacity at all? I would like to use this relax_opacity to manually turn off the convection. Is this idea right? If yes, then how shall I carry out relax_opacity please? Thank you very much :-) Sincerely, Jing |

Hi, This should be just a matter of adding some more things to your log_columns.list so that it will have all of the information needed to make the Kipp plots. Here's a sample log_columns.list that I use for massive stars. I think these are the crucial additions mixing_regions 40 burning_regions 80 and ! mass fractions near center center h1 center he4 center c12 center n14 center o16 center ne20 center si28 center s32 center ar36 center ca40 center fe54 center fe56 center ni56 center cr56 ! etc. -- do as many of these 'center' commands as desired My apologies for the state of the Tioga scripts in mesa -- they are something I've tossed together over the years for my own use without doing a careful reworking to make them in any way "user friendly". Let me know if you still have problems with the Kipp plots -- they are very useful! Hi Roni, Good to hear from your! Back in the old days (last year) Ledoux wasn't yet in as an option, so the results in the paper were run with Schwarzschild. The inlist in mesa/star/test_suite/15M_si_burn is like what we used for the paper. I encourage you to get in touch with Tuguldur Sukhbold for more up-to-date information about mesa + massive stars. He's making good use of the new options in mesa for Ledoux and semiconvection for stars from 15-60 Msun. Perhaps he'll be able to make one of his inlists available -- they are more advanced than anything I've done! Hi Umberto, Are these hdf5 files to use with MPPNP? If I understand correctly, then you will need an installation of SE, and in your MESA makefile set "USE_SE" to true, and give it the path to your SE installation, then re-compile. You can then set use_se_output (or something similar) to .true. in your work directory inlist, which also requires an se.input file in your work dir. If this helps, let me know and I can send you an example se.input file. Best, Sam. Hi, This is just for fun -- did you know that you can add your own title to a pgstar plot? here's an example where I've added "HD49385" at the top by adding these lines to the inlist (at the end of this email I've copied info from star/public/pgstar_defaults.dek about what these do) show_TRho_Profile_annotation1 = .true. annotation1_ci = 1 ! color index annotation1_ch = 1.1 ! character height annotation1_lw = 1 ! line width annotation1_cf = 1 ! character font (1=sans serif, 2=roman, 3=italic, 4=script) annotation1_side = 'T' ! T, B, L, or R annotation1_disp = 1.8 ! displacement perpendicular to axis annotation1_coord = 0.5 ! fractional location along axis annotation1_fjust = 0.5 ! 0 => left justified, 0.5 => centered, 1 => right justified annotation1_text = 'HD49385' currently you can have up to 3 annotation strings. this isn't a really general solution, but it can be useful at times. cheers, Bill ! "annotation" strings -- provide args for PGMTXT ! Write text at a position specified relative to the viewport (outside ! or inside). The text is written using the current values of ! attributes color-index, line-width, character-height, and ! character-font. ! ! SIDE : must include one of the characters 'B', 'L', 'T', ! or 'R' signifying the Bottom, Left, Top, or Right ! margin of the viewport. If it includes 'LV' or ! 'RV', the string is written perpendicular to the ! frame rather than parallel to it. ! DISP : the displacement of the character string from the ! specified edge of the viewport, measured outwards ! from the viewport in units of the character ! height. Use a negative value to write inside the ! viewport, a positive value to write outside. ! COORD : the location of the character string along the ! specified edge of the viewport, as a fraction of ! the length of the edge. ! FJUST : controls justification of the string parallel to ! the specified edge of the viewport. If ! FJUST = 0.0, the left-hand end of the string will ! be placed at COORD; if JUST = 0.5, the center of ! the string will be placed at COORD; if JUST = 1.0, ! the right-hand end of the string will be placed at ! at COORD. Hello everyone, I'm trying to install MESA version 3661, using gfortran version 4.6.1. (probably not a compiler issue?) I ran ./install, and things appeared to go smoothly, until I ran into a segmentation fault when the install script ran the test program in /mesa/eos. The following is the last part of the output: read ../../data/eosDT_data/helm_table.dat write ../../data/eosDT_data/cache/helm_table.bin ../utils/build_and_test: line 33: 11280 Segmentation fault ./test_quietly /home/jeff/mesa/eos/test FAILED /home/jeff/mesa/eos ./build_and_test FAILED After some work, I found the offending line in the file eosDT_load_tables.f in mesa/eos/private: tbl(1,eosDT_ilnPgas,:,:) = tbl2(jlogPgas,:,:)*ln10 Maybe it isn't loading the eos tables correctly? That seems strange because the install script said the eos data was successfully installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! -Jeff |

Hi, There is a great program currently running here at KITP on asteroseismology. http://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/activities/dbdetails?acro=asteroseismo11 I recently gave an informal talk for the participants discussing recent efforts to make mesa useful in this area of research. Like other KITP talks, this one was recorded and is available for your viewing pleasure. ;-) http://online.kitp.ucsb.edu/online/asteroseismo11/paxton/ If you are interested in trying mesa for asteroseismology, please let me know. It has reached the stage of being an interesting candidate, but it still needs testing by people other than myself. In particular, we need to have comparisons with detailed results from other codes on well studied cases. Things are looking good so far, but more testing will be required before we can declare it "science ready" for asteroseismology. Cheers, Bill |

Hi Umberto, Glad you are ready to go now. What sort of problems are you planning to try? You might look in star/test_suite to see if there is something you can use as an initial guide. Don't hesitate to send questions to mesa-users, and don't hesitate to answer questions you see there when you can! Hi Umberto, What version of MESA is this? Can you confirm that the module files exist in the place the compiler is looking for them? The error message is telling you that it can't find eos_def.mod and eos_lib.mod in /home/umberto/mesa/include, which is where they should be if the eos module compiled and exported correctly. Hi Jean-Claude, These quantities are treated as scalars, which means that the last values that are read in the namelist will be the one that's stored. This would be an excellent opportunity to use the run_star_extras functionality. For example, extras_finish_step could be modified to save any number of models and also write out profiles at the same time. Hi all, is it possible to create 2 (or more) restart files during the same run ? I tried to add to my inlist: -------------------------------------------------------- save_model_number = 100 save_model_filename = 'test_1.mod' save_model_number = 200 save_model_filename = 'test_2.mod' -------------------------------------------------------- but only the second is created ? Also, is there an easy way to save the corresponding profiles ? For now I am adjusting profile_interval accordingly but it's not ideal and will become problematic when I will be saving two models. Thanks a lot, JC |

Hi Bill, Many thanks. So now I got an HR plot. How do I get other types of plots, e.g. a Kippenhahn plot? Hi Roni, Good to hear from you! On Oct 9, 2011, at 2:19 AM, Roni Waldman wrote: > Obviously I'm doing something basically wrong. you need to use the "tioga" command instead of just plain "ruby" if the install worked okay, you should be able to get a brief "help" just by typing tioga at the command line. It outputs the following. Let me know if you have problems. Cheers, Bill /Users/bpaxton/mesa: tioga This program is a command line interface for the open-source tioga kernel. The tioga kernel is for creating figures and plots using Ruby, PDF, and TeX. Following is a brief description of the tioga command line options. For more information, visit http://theory.kitp.ucsb.edu/~paxton/tioga.html. Before any command line information is processed, tioga runs ~/.tiogainit if it exists. The primary use of this file is to set your default pdf viewer command (see below). If there are no command line arguments, or the argument is -h, this help info is output. Otherwise, the command line should start with a tioga file name (with extension .rb). Since the extension is known, you can skip typing it if you like. The remainder of the command line should consist of an optional series of control commands followed by a figure command. Any control commands are done after ~/.tiogainit and before the figure file is loaded. -r file runs the file (using Ruby's require method). -C dir changes the working directory. If there is no -C command, tioga changes the working directory to the location of the figure file . -v prints version information. The figure command comes last and should be one of these: -l output a list of the defined figures by number and name. -<num> make and show figure with index equal <num> (0 <= num < num_figures). -m <figs> make PDFs without showing them in the viewer. -s <figs> make and show PDFs, each in a separate viewer window. -p <figs> make PDFs and show the portfolio as a multi-page document. If the figure command is omitted, then it defaults to -0. If <figs> is omitted, then tioga does all the figures defined in the file ordered by their definition index numbers. Otherwise, <figs> must be either a defined figure name (as supplied to def_figure in the tioga file), or a valid ruby array index number for a figure (can be negative), or a valid ruby range specification selecting a sequence of figures, or a space-less, comma-separated list of figure indices and ranges. For example, -s Plot1 makes and shows the pdf for the figure named Plot1, and -p 5,0..3,-1 makes a portfolio with the figure having index 5 on page 1, followed by pages showing the figures with indices 0, 1, 2, 3, and -1. The viewer for showing PDFs is specified by the $pdf_viewer variable in tioga. The default value can be set by creating a .tiogainit file in your home directory. The .tiogainit file is run before any command line options are processed. Your current setting for $pdf_viewer is repreview. To change it, edit ~/.tiogainit to add the line $pdf_viewer = 'my viewer command'. The command tioga uses to show a pdf is $pdf_viewer + ' ' + full_PDF_filename. You can use the -e control command to try a different viewer setting by doing the $pdf_viewer assignment from the command line. |
